"Undercover Surrealism is the first major survey of DOCUMENTS the radical surrealist magazine published in France in 1929 and 1930 and edited by the avant-garde philosopher and novelist Georges Bataille. DOCUMENTS combined an eclectic mixture of art archaeology ethnography and popular culture drawing in many of the greatest writers poets and artists of the time including Carl Einstein Robert Desnos Pablo Picasso Joan Miro and Andre Masson. With essays by leading authorities on Bataille and surrealism and new translations of original articles. 201219543New York: W. W. Norton & Co 2012. First US edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo. 101pp. Black textured paper over boards gilt spine title. A fine copy. The dustwrapper is not price-clipped and is fine as well. "The Alliterative Morte Darthur" first appeared around the year 1400 and now exists only in one manuscript copy held at Lincoln Cathedral. It was a milestone not only in that it marked a transmission of Arthurian material based on the Welsh on Wace and on Geoffrey but also because it was the first time the story of Arthur was told in English The verse like Gawain harkens back to the Anglo-Saxon style of poetry: each line has four stresses and contains three alliterating syllables. This edition uses the 1974 Benson edition of the text and on each facing page a translation by Armitage into modern English but also in matching alliterative verse A wonderful feat and enhanced by the Introduction a note on the meter of the original by Simpson and a list of the characters in the narrative. 20032287669Basic Books 2003. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Jacket spine head lightly bumped. 2003 Hard Cover. xiii 271 pp. We all appreciate that there are differences in the typical psychology of men and women. Yet underlying these subtle differences Simon Baron-Cohen believes there is one essential difference and it affects everything we do: Men have a tendency to analyze and construct systems while women are inclined to empathize. With fresh evidence for these claims Baron-Cohen explores how these sex differences arise more from biological than cultural causes and shows us how each brain type contributes in various ways to what we think of as "intelligence." Emphasizing that not all men have the typically "male" brain which he calls Type "S" and not all women have the typically female brain Type "E" Baron-Cohen explores the cutting-edge research that illuminates our individual differences and explains why a truly "balanced" brain is so rare. Filled with surprising and illuminating case studies many from Baron-Cohen's own clinical practice The Essential Difference moves beyond the stereotypes to elucidate over twenty years of groundbreaking research. From gossip to aggression Baron-Cohen dissects each brain type and even presents a new theory that autism as well as its close relative Asperger's syndrome can be understood as an extreme form of the male brain. Smart and engaging this is the thinking person's guide to gender difference a book that promises to change the conversation about-and between-men and women. Basic Books hardcover books
