Mai 1828 in Berlin; 20. Juli 1870 ebenda war ein deutscher Augenarzt königlich preußischer Geheimer Medizinalrat und ordentlicher Professor der von ihm reformierten Augenheilkunde an der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin. Er begründete in Deutschland das Fach der Augenheilkunde oder Ophthalmologie die bis dahin zur Chirurgie gehörte. Albrecht von Graefe entstammt einer sächsischen Familie und war der Sohn des königlich preußischen Geheimen Medizinalrats und Generalstabsarztes der Armee Carl Ferdinand von Graefe 17871840 ordentlicher Professor der Medizin und Chirurgie sowie Gründungsdirektor der Chirurgischen Klinik der Universität Berlin und dessen Frau Auguste von Alten 17971857. Vater Carl Ferdinand war erst am 2./14. Februar 1826 in Sankt Petersburg in den polnischen erblichen Adelsstand erhoben worden mit preußischer Adelsanerkennung am 16. November 1826 in Berlin. Albrecht von Graefe war ein Patenkind des preußischen Königs Friedrich Willhelm III. Graefes Geburtshaus war die 1824 von Karl Friedrich Schinkel erbaute Villa Finkenherd in Berlin-Tiergarten die ab 1880 das bekannte Ausflugslokal Charlottenhof beherbergte und 1943 den Bomben des Zweiten Weltkriegs zum Opfer fiel. An seiner Stelle wurde 1970 aus Anlass des hundertsten Todestages Albrecht von Graefes eine Gedenkstele errichtet auf der zu lesen ist: Hier stand der Finkenherd das Geburtshaus Albrecht von Graefes geb. 22. Mai 1828 gest. 20. Juli 1870. Albrecht von Graefe besuchte das Französische Gymnasium und studierte ab 1843 Medizin Mathematik Physik und Chemie in Berlin. Zu seinen Lehrern gehörten Lukas Schönlein Emil du Bois-Reymond Rudolf Virchow und Johann Christian Jüngken. Seine Dissertation mit dem Titel De bromo ejusque praesipuis praeparatis verfasste Graefe 1847 auf Lateinisch bei Johannes Müller. Danach war er Assistenzarzt in Prag wo er begann sich ganz der Augenheilkunde zu widmen. Als seinen ersten Lehrer auf augenheilkundlichem Gebiet nennt Graefe Ferdinand von Arlt welchem er in Prag erstmals im Herbst 1848 begegnete. Er lernte weiter in Paris bei Sichel und Desmarres Wien bei Friedrich Jäger von Jaxtthal und London bei William Bowman und George Critchett 18171882 und kehrte 1852 nach Berlin zurück wo er sich im selben Jahr für Chirurgie und Augenheilkunde habilitierte und eine private Augenklinik mit 120 Betten eröffnete die sowohl in der Praxis wie auch in der Forschung alsbald Weltruhm genoss. Bei der Behandlung war Graefe außerordentlich sozial eingestellt da er keinen Unterschied hinsichtlich der sozialen Schichten machte nicht zuletzt deshalb nannte ihn sein Schüler Julius Hirschberg in einem Nachruf einen Apostel der leidenden Menschheit. Zwei Jahre später 1854 gründete er mit dem Archiv für Ophthalmologie die erste augenärztliche Fachzeitschrift. Gemeinsam mit dem österreichischen Ophthalmologen Ferdinand von Arlt und dem niederländischen Physiologen Frans Cornelis Donders fungierte Graefe als Herausgeber. Zudem verfasste er zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Aufsätze. Er brachte die sich formierende Augenheilkunde mit anderen medizinischen Disziplinen dadurch in Verbindung dass er die Zusammenhänge zwischen Augenleiden und inneren oder neurologischen Erkrankungen wie Diabetes mellitus Nierenleiden oder Hirntumoren Stauungspapille aufdeckte. Im Jahr 1858 wurde Graefe zum Mitglied der Leopoldina gewählt. 1868 wurde Graefe Direktor der augenärztlichen Abteilung der Charité und war besonders erfolgreich bei der Behandlung des Grünen Stars und des von ihm schon zuvor ntersuchten Schielens Strabismus. Ab 1866 wirkte er zudem als Ordinarius an der Universität Berlin. Die von Graefe entwickelte Operationstechnik modifiziert lineare Extraktionsmethode des grauen Stars war Grundlage für die Operationsmethoden dieser Erkrankung bis in die 60er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bis dahin war das von ihm eingeführte schmale Starmesser Graefe-Messer zur Eröffnung des Auges in Gebrauch. Mehr als 10.000 Augenoperationen soll er durchgeführt haben. Zu seinen bedeutenden Leistung zählt auch die Empfehlung der Iridektomie bei Glaukom. Verschiedene Fachbegriffe tragen den Namen des Mediziners wie beispielsweise das Graefe-Syndrom der Graefe-Fleck oder der Graefe-Reflex. Auch die konsequente Anwendung des von Helmholtz entwickelten Augenspiegels geht auf ihn zurück. Damit schuf er die Diagnostik der Augenkrankheiten des Augenhintergrundes Aderhaut Netzhaut Sehnerv und damit eine genauere Identifizierung der als Amblyopie bezeichneten Augenleiden. 1857 fand der erste Kongress der späteren Deutschen ophthalmologischen Gesellschaft ab 1920 so benannt in Heidelberg statt der von Graefe initiiert wurde. Als Lehrer Johann Friedrich Horners gab Graefe den Anstoß zur Entwicklung der Ophthalmologie in der Schweiz. Von 1859 bis 1869 kam Graefe regelmäßig im September zur Erholung ins ausserrhodische Heiden und operierte Augenkranke aus aller Welt. Das Hotel Freihof verwandelte sich während seiner Anwesenheit in eine Augenklinik. Graefe trug entscheidend zum Aufschwung Heidens als Kurort bei. Ihm zu Ehren wurde im Waldpark ein Gedenkstein aufgestellt. Zu Albrecht von Graefes Schülern gehörten unter anderem Karl Schweigger und Theodor Leber die sich bei ihm habilitierten sowie von Zehender Hermann Schmidt-Rimpler Julius Jacobson Alfred Graefe Albrecht von Graefes Cousin Theodor Saemisch und Wilhelm Manz 18331911. Die 1758 veröffentlichte Arbeit "Diss. de febrius biliosis seu historia epidemiae Lausannensis anni 1775" Lausanne führte zu einer wissenschaftlichen Controverse mit De Haen. Besonders grosses Aufsehen erregte Tissot aber durch seine populär-med. Schriften unter denen die berühmteste die über Onanie ist. Sie führt den Titel: "L'onanisme ou dissert. physique sur les maladies produites par la masturbation" Löwen 1760; 1764 Paris 1769 und viele andere Auflagen. Tissot erlangte in Folge dessen eine ganz bedeutende Praxis und sein Ruf verbreitete sich so sehr dass ihm verschiedene glänzende Anerbietungen gemacht wurden. Doch lehnte er sie alle ab und verblieb an seinem bisherigen Wirkungskreise wo er die Professur am Coll. méd. erhielt. Erst 1780 gab er den lebhaften Bemühungen Kaiser's Joseph's II nach und folgte seinem Rufe als Professor der med. Klinik nach Pavia an Stelle von BORSIERI der nach Mailand gegangen war. In dieser neuen Stellung wirkte Tissot weniger segensreich als akad. Lehrer als vielmehr duch seine ausserordentlich glücklichen und glänzenden therapeutischen Erfolge die er bei einer gerade ausgebrochenen schweren Epidemie von Gallenfieber durch seine eigene abweichende Behandlungsmethode erzielte. Doch kehrte er nach 3jähr. Lehrtätigkeit wieder nach Lausanne zurück nachdem er inzwischen eine Reise durch Italien gemacht hatte wo ihm obwohl er Protestant war die Ehre einer längeren und besonders freundlichen Audienz beim Papst in Rom zu Theil wurde. Von seinen Landsleuten wurde seine Rückkehr als ein freudiges Ereignis gefeiert. Tissot starb am 15. Juni 1797. Er war einer der berühmtesten Praktiker seiner Zeit auch ein vertrauter Freund von Haller und Zimmermann. Ausser dessen citirten Schriften sind noch folgende erwähneswert: "Avis au peuple sur la santé" Lausanne 1761 eine Schrift die in weniger als 6 Jahren 10 Auflagen erlebte später in vielen weiteren Auflagen erschienen und in fast alle europäischen Sprachen übersetzt ist - "De valetudine litteratorum" Ib.1776 - "Traité de l'épilepsie" Paris 1770 - "Traité des nerfs et de leurs maladies" Ib. 1782 4 voll.; deutsch Wintherthur 1781-82 4 bde.; ital. The Luddites were a group of desperate British weavers who broke into factories and destroyed textile machines in order to defend quality products made by skilled workers against mass produced machine made products. Ned Ludd a young worker who was thought to have been one of the first to demolish textile machinery was the namesake of the movement.<br /> <br /> The alphabetical list of prisoners includes these transported to Australia: John Eadon John Baines Charles Milnes William Blakeborough and George Duckworth age 23 at the time of the trial.
