This document says Howes was reprinted "to discredit" Cameron a Pennsylvania kingmaking politician who stuffed his pockets with the spoils of a panoply of public offices. In 1838 President Van Buren made him an Indian Commissioner in charge of settling the Winnebago Indian land claims. The appointment ended in scandal when he used his own bank's notes as part of the adjustment. He became derisively known as "The Great Winnebago Chief." The front wrapper quoting from the St. Louis Reporter calls Cameron's activities "infamous speculation." Bibliographers-- recording only a 38-page pamphlet under this title-- conclude that this pamphlet was printed in 1839. That seems unlikely. Original House Document 229 was printed during the 25th Congress in 1839. This reprint was published to thwart Cameron's designs on a U.S. Senate seat and was probably printed in 1855: he was running for the Senate that year and a related pamphlet entitled a Rejoinder to the Defence Published by Simon Cameron also issued in 1855. Each of them exposes Cameron's shady business dealings during his term as Indian Commissioner. "Plot of Simon Cameron and fellow rascals to defraud these Indians of half a million dollars frustrated by a young army officer E.A. Hitchcock" Howes. An early bibliography of books printed by the Elzevirs preceded by a history of this famous Dutch family of booksellers publishers and printers. The bibliography is curiously arranged. In the first part books printed in-12 are described in chronological order. The second part includes collections of works by the same author or on the same subject. The third part contains works on politics history and religion. The fourth part lists books in grand in-12 and small in-8. In the fifth part books printed in sizes smaller or larger than in-12 are described. Also included is a special section of books printed in oriental languages. Over 50 pages of indexes. Simon Bérard 1783-1859 was a French politician industrialist and book-collector. Copy belonging to Simon Gratz 1773-1839 with his signature and date 1817 the year after publication on the front end paper and on the title page. The signature matches examples of his signature which can be seen online at www.kaplancollection.org/item/deed-simon-gratz-to-james-duncan-and-2b696467 The book then bears the donation bookplate of another later "Simon Gratz esq" 1837-1925 who was a prominent 19th-century Philadelphia lawyer educator and civic leader. The bookplate is from Gratz College which the later Simon Gratz helped found. Nikelsburger takes on an apostate Jew Rev. Frey who is intent on converting his former coreligionists to Christianity. In his opening letter to Frey Nikelsburger does not hold back: "In your eagerness to convert the Jews to your way of thinking you make no scruples of converting and perverting the prophets by turning their words to a meaning which you conceive to be best adapted to your purpose; and in doing this you make them not only flatly contradict each other but themselves also." "For American Jews Koul Jacob seemed an appropriate answer to Frey a Jewish convert to Christianity who had resumed his missionary activities shortly after his arrival in America. It was a well-tempered but firm refutation of Frey's arguments. Contemporary blue title wrappers lightly chipped at extremities lettered in black. Stain limited to top margin throughout latter half else a very good copy text clean and crisp. First edition of this rare Brief of Title. The Gratz family of merchants and community leaders in Philadelphia was founded by Barnard Gratz 1738-1801. As a young man he emigrated from Germany to London where he was briefly employed as a clerk. Shortly after relocating to Philadelphia in 1754 he went into business as a merchant in the coastal and West Indian trade and formed around 1760 a lasting partnership with his brother Michael who was involved in the Indian and fur trade as well as land speculation. The two brothers helped found the first synagogue in Philadelphia. Two of Michael's sons Simon Gratz 1773-1839 and his brother Hyman 1776-1857 carried on the family business. Apart from his ongoing involvement with the Jewish Congregation Mikveh Israel "Simon was among the founders of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts" Morais and "a director of the Pennsylvania Botanical Garden" Rosenbloom. Includes a three-page extract from the will of Simon Gratz dated February 16 1839 with his instructions for the disposition of the 71 acres of his estate contained in "the four tracts of land mentioned at the beginning of this Brief." As noted in the present brief p. 28 The Farmers and Mechanics Land and Building Association received its Charter of Encorporation on March 17 1852 acquiring by purchase the Willington Estate from Louisa Gratz Edward Gratz David Gratz and Elizabeth Gratz on April 16 1852. Provenance: The business card of Henry Tunison Jr. "Real Estate Agent and Collector of House and Ground Rents. S. E. Corner 18th & Spruce Streets Philadelphia" has been mounted at the bottom of the front wrapper; Mr. Tunison's manuscript entry appears at the top. A rare item not indexed in OCLC which does however locate two copies of an 1871 edition at Hebrew Union College and the University of Michigan; Singerman is also only aware of the 1871 printing noting copies at the American Jewish Historical Society and the Library Company of Philadelphia.
