Among them are three reproductions of Milton portraits including Milton as an infant as a boy and the famous Romney painting of the blind Milton dictating to his daughters this plate being the folding one. To our knowledge this copy of the Boydell Milton is an uniquely hand-colored copy. All the plates other than the Milton portraits are the artwork of Westall. These have an unmistakable affinity to the heroic style of Blake his contemporary. The men and even the women can have exaggerated bulging muscles as found most famously in Michelangelo. As invited by Milton's epic light contends with dark and the illustrations serve up a phantasmagoria of imagery with swirling shadows and specters. The hand-coloring is of a very high caliber and we think greatly enriches the mezzotints. The three volumes contain all the major poetry of Milton -- "Paradise Lost" "Paradise Regained" "Samson Agonistes" "Comus" etc. etc. Note all half-titles are present. Binding of a rich russet/crimson straight-grained morocco with bands of blindstamping and gilt-stamping decoration on the boards and gilt decoration within and on the raised bands. Decoration consists of ruling Greek palmettos and more floral rinceaux bands. Conditiion: morocco binding with minor abrasions and wear. One leaf with repaired tear Vol. II pp. 103/4. No copy at auction of any edition in over 40 years and less than a handful of of all editions on OCLC. Bound in newer cream wrappers. Some wear and fraying to page edges. A small red stamp on bottom margin of title-page. Some occasional soiling to plates generally not affecting image. Traces of glue residue on inner blank margins of a few plates. Music leaves with some dampstaining. Housed in a green reverse calf folder. Overall a very nice copy. Referring to the allemande ìWhen the dance was introduced in Paris where it became popular in the 1760s and 1770s it was done quite differently from the German way at least according to the French dancing master Simon Guillaume. The main interest of the French version lay in a series of joined hand positions through which the partners moved by passing under each other's arms turning each other around and passing behind each other's back. The steps to the dance were of secondary importance judging from the perfunctory manner in which they are treated in French books describing the allemande and seem to have been subject to some variation.In his Almanach Dansant 1770 Guillaume described two allemande steps out of the several he said existed the main one in 2/4 time and another in 3/8.î The International Encyclopedia of Dance. Van der Guchte". Early stamped insignia on front pastedown modest tanning but a very good copy. First edition in English of a significant imaginary voyage of particular import for its relation to early conceptions of Australia. The first edition was published under a false Bordeaux 1710 imprint and three other editions appeared similarly dated. Recent authorities have sorted out the precedence with the first edition being identified with some confidence as actually Rouen 1714. The translator's dedication is signed Stephen Whatley. Tyssot de Patot's novel "is a carefully written well authenticated story of travel and adventure in Europe in Africa in Asia and in an unknown land far beyond the Cape of Good Hope. The realism of the setting is based upon a close following of accounts of real travelers such as Dellon Tavernier Mocquet and Lahontan. There is nothing fantastic unbelievable or overdrawn in the descriptions of the Austral continent. Tyssot seems to restrain himself consciously in order to write an apparently true story. Indirect criticism by the example of an imaginary and virtuous community is used here as in all the previous novels of the type. The journey to the unknown land is very carefully authenticated as is the return journey. Discussions of science and religion are fitted into the adventures much more artistically than in the case of the novels of Foigny and Vairasse.From the point of the history of ideas.it is a very interesting document."- Atkinson. An important imaginary journey to Australia called a "landmark" by Atkinson. Based on a variety of real voyages the descriptions are believable and realistic. The author offers a detailed account of making a camp building a raft. While the book did not range much beyond the confines of the traditional Utopias of the times it did however include "living fossils" giant birds and strange flora that survived from prehistoric eras arguably making it one of the first modern Lost World novels. After being shipwrecked on the continent the narrator and a friend pressed on and developed a farm in "a plentiful fruitful country" until forced to flee by a treacherous woman. Tyssot de Patot 1655-1727 was a Huguenot who lived most of his life in Holland where he pursued a career as professor of Mathematics at the Athenaeum Illustre in Deventer the capital of the province of Overijssel. First edition dedicated to the famous mathematician Leonhard Euler 1707-1783. Klugel based his writings on that of Euler's work on optics. In his parts VII and VIII he deals with the telescope and especially the microscope. / Euler's own work on the theory of the achromatic microscope was written as early as 1762 and 1771 when he dealt with the subject more fully. In 1774 Euler's pupil and friend Nicolas Fuss wrote a little book on how to construct an achromatic microscope. Klugel translated that work in 1778 and then followed that with this more thorough treatment being his Analytische Dioptrik also 1778. Due to the crudeness of design of the objective made in 1791by Francois Beeldsnyder 1755-1808 a colonel in the Amsterdam cavalry Mayall asserts and others uphold this view that he feels the discussion of the dates of origin or this instrument are at best unclear. :: Mayall. In 1803-31 he published his famous dictionary of mathematics Mathematisches Worterbuch 5 vols. / Provenance II: I Johann Gottfried Kohler 1745-1801 Germen astronomer known for discovering a number of nebulae start clusters and galaxies. He was a colleague of Johann Elert Bode another German astronomer of importance. In 1785 Kohler was appointed jointly director of the Desden Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon and the Kunstkammer. His catalogue of nebulae was published in 1780. He wrote a number of astronomical papers in German and the following in the Philosophical Transactions "Observations on the transit of Mercury 1786 May 4 at Dresden" P.T. 1787. A beautiful plate with stunning early colour from Lacépède's "La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle" an important scholarly work and one of the finest examples of eighteenth-century French natural history illustration.<br/> <br/>A professor of zoology at the Museum of Natural History the French naturalist Bernard-Germain-Étienne Delaville Comte de Lacépède 1756-1825 was a versatile and precocious scholar who published a number of books on zoology physics and music. He was greatly influenced by the pioneering naturalist Georges Louis Marie Leclerc comte de Buffon whom he succeeded as Intendant at the Jardin du Roi which later became the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793. During his tenure Lacépède completed a comprehensive study of amphibians and reptiles Historie Naturelle des Quadrupèdes Ovipares et des Serpens which was published as a supplement to Buffon's magnum opus on animal classification Histoire Naturelle Générale et Particulière. In 1800-1 he published the first edition of La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle a thorough survey of the various species of quadrupeds reptiles and amphibians in the impressive collection of the Museum of Natural History. This magnificent work was comprised of descriptive text written by Lacépède and his colleague Georges L. C. Baron Cuvier 1769-1832 as well as a number of finely rendered plates after the most eminent natural history artists of the period Nicolas Maréchal 1753-1803 Nicolas Huet 1770-1830 and Léon de Wailly 1801-1824. Painted from life on vellum these beautifully detailed illustrations faithfully captured the appearance of the wondrous animals in the Paris menagerie. A pupil of J. G. Wille and C. N. An important treatise on crop rotation. La Salle de l'Etang d. 1765 provides one of the earliest systematic plans for rotating food crops with "artificial" pastures allowing tilled lands to rebuild nutrient reserves. In addition the author advocates raising livestock for manure to fertilize dry and sterile lands. In order to facilitate his plan he calls for the establishment of a national bureau of agriculture that would be responsible for record-keeping distributing produce throughout the country in times of famine and regional crises regulating foreign trade in agricultural products and maintaining fair prices. A second edition of La Salle de l'Etang's treatise appeared in 1758 and a third expanded version of 330 pages in 1762 both with a Brussels imprint. Girard was trained at the École des Ponts et Chaussées and was one of the few engineers of his time with sufficient mathematical knowledge to read the works of Euler. In 1787 Girard began investigating the strength of wood as a structural material and was able to apply his first results in this field in 1790 when he won the Académie des Science's competition on the theory and practice of canal and harbor lock construction. In 1798 he published his Traité analytique de la résistance des solides containing the results of his researches on the strength and resistance of building stone timber and wrought iron; it was the first book published in France to deal with the theory of beams in all its aspects strength flexural strength elastic stability yield strength. Citing literature and the classics including Pindar Hesiod Aristophanes and Homer in Greek as well as contemporary sources from scientific journals to travel accounts the author examines the seasons the meteorological manifestations of winter its effect on humans and its aesthetic and bodily pleasures. He discusses "absolute cold" the causes of wind snow's qualities and colors superstitious beliefs in its healing powers frost and hoarfrost avalanches glaciers ice and its different qualities chemical experiments for manufacturing artificial ice and physiological and physical effects of winter and cold on animals for example whose fur changes color; on humans when they freeze to death or nearly so; or on windowpanes which "sweat" with condensed moisture. In the final pages he considers the spiritual benefits of winter so conducive to introspection and in his concluding remarks recommends it as the best season for experiments in electricity.The work is dedicated to Otto Christian von Lohenschiold 1720-1761 Rector of the Academy University of Tübingen. In a humorous preface the author's friend Johann Kies Professor of physics and mathematics at Tübingen and author of several physics treatises including a dissertation on the rainbow concedes that unwilling to be reminded of a season that he loathes he could not bring himself to read the book but should his friend write a treatise on one of the other seasons he promises to read it! A rare document petitioning Parliament to further government protections of the coach business through stricter licensing rules. This document is among the earliest examples of lobbying literature which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. A beautiful plate with stunning early colour from Lacépède's "La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle" an important scholarly work and one of the finest examples of eighteenth-century French natural history illustration.<br/> <br/>A professor of zoology at the Museum of Natural History the French naturalist Bernard-Germain-Étienne Delaville Comte de Lacépède 1756-1825 was a versatile and precocious scholar who published a number of books on zoology physics and music. He was greatly influenced by the pioneering naturalist Georges Louis Marie Leclerc comte de Buffon whom he succeeded as Intendant at the Jardin du Roi which later became the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793. During his tenure Lacépède completed a comprehensive study of amphibians and reptiles Historie Naturelle des Quadrupèdes Ovipares et des Serpens which was published as a supplement to Buffon's magnum opus on animal classification Histoire Naturelle Générale et Particulière. In 1800-1 he published the first edition of La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle a thorough survey of the various species of quadrupeds reptiles and amphibians in the impressive collection of the Museum of Natural History. This magnificent work was comprised of descriptive text written by Lacépède and his colleague Georges L. C. Baron Cuvier 1769-1832 as well as a number of finely rendered plates after the most eminent natural history artists of the period Nicolas Maréchal 1753-1803 Nicolas Huet 1770-1830 and Léon de Wailly 1801-1824. Painted from life on vellum these beautifully detailed illustrations faithfully captured the appearance of the wondrous animals in the Paris menagerie. A pupil of J. G. Wille and C. N.
