Dicc. Porrúa notes that his birth and death dates are unknown but he is known to have taught self defense by 1787. Of engraver Manuel Aráoz Mathes comments: "Manuel Aráoz instructor in engraving produced thirteen excellent plates of fencing and fighting maneuvers using the saber for Simón de FrÃas Tratado elemental de la destreza del sable Imprenta de Arizpe. The artist who signs his name P. Patiño or P.P. may be sculptor and artist Pedro Patiño Ixtolinque." The earliest book on any form of fencing published in Mexico the work is a thorough guide to the formal sport of fencing with sabers complete with accurate detailed illustrations. The above two-part work contains reports on surgical cases handled at the Rostock Hospital where Simon was professor of surgery over the five-year period between 1861 and 1865. The first part titled "Summarische Berichte . . . Chirurgische Mittheilungen mit Beschreibung interessanterer Krankheitsfälle" contains among other things Simon's report of the cure by incision and double puncture of two large abdominal tumors caused by the parasite Echinococcus. The second part devoted to plastic surgery contains reports on plastic operations of the mouth vagina and rectum including the lip operation cited above and an account of plastic operations on the vaginal wall between the rectum and genital canal. The first entitled "Savant de huit ans: sciences arts et métiers;" the second entitled "Petit coloriste: de enluminure." Describes the printing trades. With six color plates entitled Peintre frontispiece Sculpture Graveur en taille-douce Relieur Imprimeur en caractères mobiles. Also with color title. Numerous black and white illustrations include the human anatomy and musical scores. Simon-François Blocquel 1780-1863 was a Lille printer and bookseller. Born in Douai he was orphaned and was raised by his aunt who was married to a printer and bookseller of Lille. He became an apprentice in his uncle's printing trade. He worked in association with Lille bookseller Jean-Baptiste Castiaux from 1809 to circa 1835. Blocquel published a number of works related to geography and foreign cultures see Roger J.D. Collins "Simon Blacquel Imagier et Éditeur Lillois" in the Journal de la Société des Océanistes 41 1985. He was active in the Lille business community and he also served on the municipal council of that city from 1820 to 1857. Covers rubbed and scuffed at edges worn at extremities of spine. A very rare collection of elaborately decorated letters and numerals designed and engraved by Gius Lanzani "Incisore Calligrafo" in collaboration with a team of other Italian artists and engravers. The collection consists of three sets. Each decorated letter and numeral features an elaborate allegorical design. Obvious examples include: Adam & Eve the Three Fates the The Seven Deadly Sins for numerals 2 3 and 7; and a Gallows a Lion and the Devil for the letters G L and D. Most however are not easy to decipher. Contemporary situations and events are also depicted both humorous and allegorical such as Waterloo for W. Thus we know that the plates were made sometime after 1815. Stunning calligraphy beautifully designed engraved and printed. Very scarce. OCLC locates no copies. The era of modern urological surgery began in 1869 when Gustav Simon performed the first carefully planned nephrectomy; his patient was a woman suffering from ureterovaginal fistula caused by a botched ovariotomy. After writing a brief two-page notice of the operation in 1870 see G-M 4213 Simon prepared a detailed illustrated account which he published as Volume I of his Chirurgie der Nieren. This volume contains two lithographed plates the first a schematic drawing of the patient's injury and the second an unusually artistic rendition probably from a photograph of the postoperative patient standing in front of a mirror displaying her surgical scars. </p> <p>The second volume of Chirurgie der Nieren issued five years after the first deals with the subject of kidney surgery in general discussing operations on both injured and diseased kidneys. This volume over three times as long as its predecessor contains seven plates three in color showing a gunshot injury to the kidney renal calculus and hypertrophy and pre- and post-operative pictures of a case of hydronephrosis successfully cured by surgery. THE PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT OF OHM'S LAW; HIS FIRST PUBLICATION. This short article in Annalen der Physik und Chemie preceded Ohm's book Die Galvanische Kette Mathematische Bearbeitet 1827 and is his first published scientific paper May 1825. Ohm began publishing his electricity researches in 1825 with his Vorlaufige Anzeige des Gesetzes nach welchem Metalle die Contakteletricitat leiten a paper in which he sought to find a functional relationship between the decrease in the electromagnetic force exerted by a current-carrying wire and the length of the wire. Although this paper contained some fundamental errors it was remarkable for its direct foundation on experiment a characteristic of all Ohm's early papers. In February and April of the following year Ohm published two important papers dealing separately with the two major aspects of his theory of galvanic electricity which he would later unify in his landmark Die galvanische Kette. DSB. "From the zinc and copper poles of a voltaic pile he ran two wires A and B the free ends of which terminated in small mercury-filled cups M. and N; between M and another cup O he ran a third wire C. Together A B and C formed what he called the 'invariable conductor' to distinguish it from one of the seven wires of different lengths that when placed in the circuit between O and N constituted the 'variable conductor'. . . over wire C Ohm hung the magnetic needle of a Coulomb torsion balance which served to measure the electromagnetic force exerted when one of the variable conductors completed the circuit. . . Tabulating these values against the lengths of the wires he found that his data were well represented by the formula v = 0.41 log 1x where v is the loss in force and x is the length of the wire in feet." Apparently this work was originally circulated in manuscript form at Chuquisaca 1828 before the present printed version appeared at Arequipa in 1830. Vol. I alone states 1836 as the publication date on the title page suggesting a 2nd printing each of the other volumes states 1835 as year-of-publication. All 4 uniform octavos tight and very well-preserved with beautiful marbled endpapers pastedowns and edges. Small artistic bookplate at each pastedown otherwise no writing or markings to speak of internally. Very significant documentation of Gutenberg in Strassburg the most important being the first and most important reproductions documents given at the memorable trial of 1439 in which Gutenberg himself was plaintiff. The text of the lawsuit are reprinted "verbatini et literatim" from the ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS now destroyed with a French translation. Also included are reproductions of the WATERMARKS of said documents. All of these precious documents were incinerated during the Prussian bombardment of Strassburg in 1870. <br/><br/>Our special copy comes from the libraries of the Duke d'Arenberg and Bernard Breslauer and contains two extra plates not found in ordinary copies. These handsome full-page plates are stylized reproductions of the woodcuts that were utilized as models for the steel engravings on pp. 16 and 17.<br/><br/>"Whereas Laborde's conclusions have in great part been superseded these excellent and faithful reproductions will always possess a high historical interest. . The work opens with a bibliographical essay on the hypotheses of previous writers and concludes with the results arrived at by the author himself. These are: That 1410 is the probable date of the discovery of printing in the Low Countries; that 1423 is that of the invention of movable types by "Lorenz Coster" at Haarlem; that 1436 is the authentic date of the first experiments of Gutenberg at Strasbourg ; and that 1452 is the certain date of the invention by Gutenberg of cast types at Mayence sic. The rest of the book is occupied by an attempt to establish these theses and there are many facsimiles of type and woodcuts." Bigmore & Wyman I 410. According to Pierce Butler Laborde's work is "of permanent historical scholarly value." "The Gutenberg Celebration of 1940: A Survey of the Literature" in: Library Quarterly vol. 13 no. 1 p. 64. This sentiment is shared by Frederick Goff who described Laborde's work as "valuable for us since it contains lithographic facsimiles of several of the important passages in the testimonies of the lawsuit then extant which is the nearest thing we have to the original documents." Review of Otto Fuhrmann's "Gutenberg and the Strasbourg Documents of 1439" in PBSA vol. 35 no. 1 pp. 76-7. Fuhrmann relied heavily on the present work and reproduced all of Laborde's illustrations and transcriptions. <br/><br/>Laborde transcribed not without errors the texts of the lawsuit of Strassburg resident Jerge Dritzehen against Gutenberg; these were derived from six entries in different parts of three several manuscript registers in the city of Strassburg. According to Laborde the first of these were written in a volume described by later scholars as "Vol. A" which consisted of two quires each of 42 sheets or 84 leaves in total; they were covered by a sheet of parchment which had become yellow and soiled; on the recto was written "Dicta. Testium magni consilij Anno Domini M.CCC. Tricesimo noni." The paper which had turned yellow and brown on the edge measured 10 x 9 inches. The second volume "Vol. B" was bound in parchment and consisted of 24 sheets or 48 leaves of paper sewn together 43 of the leaves being written upon. According to Laborde everything connected with the 1439 Lawsuit was written by the same scribe. Laborde's three illustrations of the watermarks two different bull's head and one balance were printed in sepia; the excellent facsimiles of eleven different passages from the Lawsuit were made from lithographic tracings. All were published here for the first time.<br/><br/>The Marquis de Laborde 1807-1869 studied at Gottingen and afterwards travelled extensively in the East. He subsequently held several diplomatic positions and was curator of the antiquities in the Louvre from 1848 to 1854 and director of the Archives of the Empire from 1856 until his death. He wrote extensively on archeology art printing and engraving.<br/><br/>From the library of the great Belgian bibliophile Prosper-Louis duc d'Arenberg d'Arschot et de Croy 1785-1878 for whom see Jonghe d'Ardoye et al. Besides his 140 letters written during the Peninsular Campaign there were 40 written during his time at Waterloo. In addition there are three maps of Portugal St. Sebastian region and the parts touching Spain and France. There are a number of letters that show the progress at Waterloo so in a letter of June 15 as commander of the Royal Horse Artillery he is asked at 10 PM to began moving. All of this was complicated by the reorganization on the run of units as numbers fell and others were incorporated into the battle formation. As they approached Waterloo for the first time they were almost fully reorganized and as he look out upon his troops he notes "they made a noble appearance".A very good copy bound in a beautiful 3/4 red morocco over red cloth. raised bands with compartments lettered and decoratively stamped in gilt some tanning to page edges housed within cloth covered slipcase with original gilt cloth depicting a cannon centrally mounted. This is the first Italian version of Pallas' travels to Russia. The costume plates are richly colored and lovely. The leaves have a nice rag content and are thus quite clean even uncommonly so compared to most Italian publications of the early nineteenth century. The work is complete as of itself; it is a part of a larger series of travel journals translated into Italian at the time. In this series this book constitutes Tomo XIII. This copy has the original wraps. These have creases and soiling. Originally printed in 1845 in New York with later editions appearing in 1850 1851 1854 and 1856. A pleasing American manual of architectural detail. The detailed plates depict geometrical patterns for the design of staircases. "The methods herein laid down by the author are entirely new and of his own invention."
