A very rare collection of elaborately decorated letters and numerals designed and engraved by Gius Lanzani "Incisore Calligrafo" in collaboration with a team of other Italian artists and engravers. The collection consists of three sets. Each decorated letter and numeral features an elaborate allegorical design. Obvious examples include: Adam & Eve the Three Fates the The Seven Deadly Sins for numerals 2 3 and 7; and a Gallows a Lion and the Devil for the letters G L and D. Most however are not easy to decipher. Contemporary situations and events are also depicted both humorous and allegorical such as Waterloo for W. Thus we know that the plates were made sometime after 1815. Stunning calligraphy beautifully designed engraved and printed. Very scarce. OCLC locates no copies. 1832025670London: E. Wilson Royal Exchange 1832. Octavo. Half-Titleads on verso xii v-viii 360 pages. Howes F93 calls this work "a valuable account of the Illinois and Indiana frontier". The author's real name was O'Ferrall. While de Toqueville's work remains the classic there is much in this fascinating account that is not only more accessible but particularly insightful in that area known as the "new west" usually ending with the Mississippi. He has accounts of Robert Owen and the New Harmony Community the lawlessness which he says should be a warning to those who think merely acquiring land will prevent them from fraud and violence. His account of a wild-eyed preacher who saw in the Cahokia Mounds a proof of the Trinity. I found in reading this remarkable account a condition of life reminiscent of Lincoln's Prairie Years though more violent. For those who think the early American frontier beyond the eastern seaboard was being civilized it is obviously true that the law of those with power connivance and greed determined who would succeed. Lincoln's character and remarkable morality is evinced even more clearly after seeing the world in which he lived. According to a pencil note on the free rear endpaper the ink signature and inscription below is that of Alexis Guignard Comte de Saint-Priest 1805-51 a French diplomat and historian of the Academie Francais. This work contains two stories: Antigone and L'Homme Sans Nom. Antigone a re-working of Sophocles' original story achieved popularity in France because it was seen as a reflection of the suffering of Louis XIV's daughter the Duchesse d'Angpuleme but Ballanche's actual muse was Juliette Recamier a beautiful and brilliant Parisian who hosted a rather famous salon. In her Ballanche perceived "a kindred unhappiness." Her "incapacity for happiness he argued is a sign of the awareness of a fallen creature of its divine origin and its nostalgia for a celestial home" McCalla 49. He saw her beauty as a reflection of her moral perfection. L'Homme Sans Nom centers on a "nameless man" who is on the council that votes for the regicide of Louis XIV in 1793; wary of inflaming political public opinion because of the recent assassination of the Duc de Berry by a Bonapartist Ballanche limited the first 1820 edition of the story to a run of 100 copies. He intended his new work "as advice for the King and a small circle of political leaders" rather than the general populace" McCalla 78. Ballanche was a French philosopher who favored a view of history in which mankind achieves "progress through ordeals." Essentially "a past epoch could possess its own rightness and legitimacy even as it had lost the right to continue" which he described in his work Palingenesie Wikipedia. The special election which Cameron won occurred in March 1845 after Senator James Buchanan resigned to become President Polk's Secretary of State. <br/> As this Letter suggests Cameron was heavily involved throughout his career in the award of government-bestowed contracts and largesse. He was dogged by allegations doubtless true of corruption. Nevertheless President Lincoln needed his support and that of Pennsylvania; Lincoln named him Secretary of War and then in 1862 minister to Russia. Cameron returned to the Senate in 1867 and served for another ten years. unknown books

The above two-part work contains reports on surgical cases handled at the Rostock Hospital where Simon was professor of surgery over the five-year period between 1861 and 1865. The first part titled "Summarische Berichte . . . Chirurgische Mittheilungen mit Beschreibung interessanterer Krankheitsfälle" contains among other things Simon's report of the cure by incision and double puncture of two large abdominal tumors caused by the parasite Echinococcus. The second part devoted to plastic surgery contains reports on plastic operations of the mouth vagina and rectum including the lip operation cited above and an account of plastic operations on the vaginal wall between the rectum and genital canal. WITH single leaf laid in "Laboratory Notes and Queries" printed on one side and signed in print S. H. Gage and with penciled notes at the bottom referencing a Zeiss catalog with slide dimensions. We've chosen to keep these two together given that Gage apparently mailed them together at the same time vertical crease is the same. Pamphlet. Although the Proceedings of the American Society of Microscopists was widely circulated in institutions both author offprints and the single sheet are rare. OCLC notes only four copies of this offprint all with 6 pages ACC#: 71115896. The single sheet appears just at Harvard ACC#: 80593603 in the Ernst Mayr Libr-MCZ. <br/><br/>Gage was a well known microscopist who authored a number of well known books during his lifetime. In the development of the Code Civil the extraordinary "Voyneau Affair" has fourfold significance. It tested in the French Supreme Court the relationship between national adoption and parental authority; established legal precedence in the rights of French war refugees in exile; explored the definition of the "tierce opposition" procedure; and assessed the limits of the concept of "civil death." The case has been frequently utilized by legal scholars to illustrated the elasticity of the Code Civil. <br/><br/>The present pamphlet is Jean-Simon Loiseau's "beautifully composed" argument on behalf of L.-R.-A. Auguste Voyneau b. 1789. As an infant Auguste disappeared during the Terror in the Vendee region and in 1795 was pronounced dead. Shortly thereafter it was determined that the infant had in fact been rescued among the corpses of a destroyed village and taken to Nantes. In 1796 a former servant of the Voyneau family encountered the young boy and thought she recognized him or at least claimed to recognize him from a telltale scar on his forehead. "Madame Voyneau however refused to accept that the boy was her son. She insisted that the child was actually the son of a poverty-stricken miller and the center of an elaborate plot to introduce an 'intruder' into her family and thus deprive them of the money that Auguste or the would-be Auguste would eventually inherit from his parents" Heuer p. 153.<br/><br/>After a thorough investigation the court of Nantes ruled that the boy was in fact her son. In the absence of her husband Auguste Voyneau who had fled the Revolution in 1789 and was then living in exile Madame Voyneau appealed the ruling which was rejected by the judges of the court of Fontenay and she was ordered to pay a restitution of 700 francs. <br/><br/>The Senatus-Consulte of 6 Floreal An X granted amnesty to the elder Auguste Voyneau who then returned to France and contested these judgments by means of a "tierce opposition" based on the fundamental importance of paternal rights and authority. The plaintiff argued that having been granted amnesty he had been "reborn" to his country and family and yet was being prohibited by the courts from exercising an essential right of a citizen and father namely to acknowledge or deny that a child was his own. "Voyneau continued to maintain that paternal rights being natural and inalienable took precedence over the formal penalties that had been imposed on emigres" Heuer p. 154. <br/><br/>On July 23 1806 the Court of Appeal in Poitiers ruled that Voyneau's "rebirth" as a French citizen did not restore him to the position of a "pere de famille" with complete power over his family since "the rights acquired by a wife or children of an amnestied man during his civil death belong to them irrevocably." Because Voyneau had gone into exile he could not contest sovereign judgments because he was "legally dead" to the State. Secondly in his absence his "widow" had brought together in a court of law the rights of both maternity and paternity and had lost the case on appeal; therefore the "tierce opposition" strategy was not permissible to him. However if Voyneau had not returned to France his daughter could have formed the third party against the judgment and the "tierce opposition" could have been employed in a separate case. <br/><br/>"The thwarted 'pere' then took his case to the Supreme Court where the case was tried in 1808. Jean-Simon Loiseau one of the chief compilers and editors of the jurisprudence of the Code Civil and the author of the present 'Plaidoyer' represented Voyneau's ostensible son Auguste. He argued that before the amnesty M. Voyneau had been neither a father nor a French citizen: 'In the eyes of the law he was not a father a husband or a citizen; he was dead for his children for his family as for his country.' Louiseau's argument directly echoed the rationale presented by the makers of the Code Civil for dissolving the marriages of those proclaimed to be civilly dead."<br/><br/>M. Voyneau and his lawyers invoked the specter of "National Adoption" arguing that if as an emigre he was stripped of his rights as father and citizen the Republic -- and not his wife -- should have represented him since the state had "adopted" the child during his absence. The idea that the state could and should literally act as the father of its adopted children was ridiculed by Loiseau in the present pamphlet but ultimately the elder Voyneau was victorious. Four days after Louiseau's argument was presented the Supreme Court reversed the lower court's decision declaring that Voyneau "retained the right to defend the condition of a child born of his marriage" and thus to reject a child believed to be "an impostor." In concluding that Voyneau could not disown a child he did not recognize as his son the Supreme Court ruled that the lower court had falsely applied the amnesty provided by the Senatus-Consulte of 6 Floreal An X. Not surprisingly the case dragged on for two more years. "After rehashing extensive testimony about the boy's physical appearance especially his eye color and the exact placement of his scar the court ruled that the evidence did indeed indicate a plot to introduce an intruder into the Voyneaus' home. The supposed Auguste was not their child" Heuer p. 155. <br/><br/>Rare: OCLC lists only two copies worldwide McGill and BnF to which CCFr adds only two others Nantes BM Poitiers BM. The era of modern urological surgery began in 1869 when Gustav Simon performed the first carefully planned nephrectomy; his patient was a woman suffering from ureterovaginal fistula caused by a botched ovariotomy. After writing a brief two-page notice of the operation in 1870 see G-M 4213 Simon prepared a detailed illustrated account which he published as Volume I of his Chirurgie der Nieren. This volume contains two lithographed plates the first a schematic drawing of the patient's injury and the second an unusually artistic rendition probably from a photograph of the postoperative patient standing in front of a mirror displaying her surgical scars. </p> <p>The second volume of Chirurgie der Nieren issued five years after the first deals with the subject of kidney surgery in general discussing operations on both injured and diseased kidneys. This volume over three times as long as its predecessor contains seven plates three in color showing a gunshot injury to the kidney renal calculus and hypertrophy and pre- and post-operative pictures of a case of hydronephrosis successfully cured by surgery. Apparently this work was originally circulated in manuscript form at Chuquisaca 1828 before the present printed version appeared at Arequipa in 1830.
