193222412New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas. Very Good in Very Good- dj. 1932. First American Edition. Hardcover. moderately shelfworn light-colored staining along front joint; jacket has paper loss at several corners various small nicks and tears some soiling and age-darkening to rear panel. Somewhat phantasmagorical novel about a young fellow the bastard son of a sailor who grows up in a grimy quayside London cul-de-sac and falls in love with a "slum-sprite" girl whose lowlife father runs the titular pub. Returning some years later from military service he finds that she's run off and become a celebrated chanteuse; he tracks her down to Rio but she denies her younger identity which of course forces him to spend the rest of the book trying to win her back. The New York Times reviewer although admiring of the writer's style was somewhat nonplussed by the novel calling it "a novel from Mars . . . a strange creation -- terse elliptical obscure peculiarly foreshortened" -- and yet "a rich and varied dish succinctly portioned out and well flavored with excitement." "Simon Jesty" was apparently a pseudonym but for whom I dunno. The author's entire literary output at least under that name seems to have consisted of this novel and one other "River Niger" published in 1935; the only possible clue to his identity is some kind of undefined connection with T.E. Lawrence who provided a strange sort of preface to the latter book based on an advance reading of the manuscript. Great noir-ish jacket illustration by the great Arthur Hawkins Jr. . Such quality of workmanship such calligraphic and intricate but confidently assured design is quite wanting in art today. We have no designers trained in this tradition. Nor do we deserve them because we do not notice nor will we pay for such attention to detail. Yet it is only when we look into Gribelin's engravings with a magnifying glass that the real inner content of his work stands revealed: the play of light and shade the intricate interlacing of foliage and lines which indicate so cleverly a roundness of form and a perspective. It is almost impossible to believe that this was achieved mainly free hand by a young man working on a recalcitrant copper plate."<br>Â Â Â Â This is one of 310 unnumbered copies printed.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Sizes vary between 1 and 2 cm. Printed in black on thick sheets of wove paper. Near fine with light soiling to the edges. A very rare collection of elaborately decorated letters and numerals designed and engraved by Gius Lanzani "Incisore Calligrafo" in collaboration with a team of other Italian artists and engravers. The collection consists of three sets. Each decorated letter and numeral features an elaborate allegorical design. Obvious examples include: Adam & Eve the Three Fates the The Seven Deadly Sins for numerals 2 3 and 7; and a Gallows a Lion and the Devil for the letters G L and D. Most however are not easy to decipher. Contemporary situations and events are also depicted both humorous and allegorical such as Waterloo for W. Thus we know that the plates were made sometime after 1815. Stunning calligraphy beautifully designed engraved and printed. Very scarce. OCLC locates no copies. A list with more detailed descriptions of each set is available. not indicated] unknown books
