Jackson 2 pages on smaller note-size sheets concerning some lands in which he had an interest - back payments taxes; on Jan. 11th larger paper 1 page the same property is being discussed naming other parties - of Oldrich Blanchard and a Mrs. Long - there was a 'consideration' of $ 10000.00 mentioned at the close; January 22 asking Jackson to communicate as Hurlburt is traveling - he is trying to wind up the legalities of the lands concerned; with a 1873 short note written to Jackson on the letterhead of David Dall Vessel Agent 241 South Water Street Chicago asking for his fees due for freight on a schooner signed by Dall; light wear old fold lines; in very good condition. According to the C.S.R. Line letterhead it was the "Only Route Through Canada Under American Management." At this point in its history the Vanderbilt family exercised control over this rail line. Slight fading to frontispiece photo but a clear image. Light even tanning internally; three leaves with small patches of damp staining. A scarce 1882 promotional for potential excursions from Portland Oregon published in conjunction by the Northern Pacific Railroad and the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company. The work is illustrated with a real photograph of the Multnomah Falls east of the city on the Columbia River. The text prints itineraries for ten trips from Portland in the Pacific Northwest to the Cascades the Dalles Seattle Tacoma Olympia Ilwaco and even Alaska almost all via the steamers of the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company. The final four leaves of text contain numerous illustrated advertisements for Portland businesses. The frontispiece photograph of the Multnomah Falls is credited in print to Issac Grundy Davidson. "One of the Northwest's premier photographers Davidson published an extensive series of scenic photographs covering many aspects of life and scenes throughout Oregon Washington and Alaska. He operated portrait studios a traveling gallery and contracted with the Northern Pacific Railroad. A keen businessman who produced the finest photographic record of Oregon during the 1870s-80s" - Mautz. This volume is hard-bound in blind-stamped brown cloth with faded gilt stamping to the spine. The binding has been repaired / reinforced at some point with some type of lacquer covering the spine and so the volume is sound and tight. There is edge-wear and rubbing to the corners and spine-ends. There is some wear/chipping to the joints. Some modest light foxing but overall the work is bright and fresh. 1886LIST112Cincinnati: St. Andrews Bay Railroad and Land Company 1886. Various Formats. Near Fine. An unusual collection of ephemera relating to the early development of the area of the Florida Panhandle east of Pensacola and an interesting ephemeral window into the type of land schemes that led to the population of Florida by northerners. In the late nineteenth century the area of Port Panama City in the Florida Panhandle was largely undeveloped though the town had strategic interest as a supplier of salt for the confederacy. In the 1880s the St. Andrews Bay Railroad and Land and Company was the second of two companies to sell land in the St. Andrews Bay region to unsuspecting northerners only to go bankrupt. The company promised to build a railroad from Alabama down to Southport crossing North Bay and eventually terminating in St. Andrews. Though the railway project was abandoned many people settled in the area as a result of the land sales. The company became known locally as the "Cincinnati Company."<br /> <br /> <br /> Includes: <br /> <br /> Warranty deeds for land sold to Lizzie Kegema Hosley of Somerville MA. 1886-1887.<br /> <br /> Letter from the St. Andrews Bay Railroad & Land Co to L.K. A promotional brochure with brief descriptions of scenic points of interest and tourist attractions along the rail line of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway issued after the completion of its Denver-Salt Lake City main line west from Salida Colorado via Marshall Pass and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River. "The railroad started as a 3 ft 914 mm narrow-gauge line running south from Denver Colorado in 1870. It served mainly as a transcontinental bridge line between Denver and Salt Lake City Utah . The Rio Grande was the epitome of mountain railroading with a motto of 'Through the Rockies not around them' and later 'Main line through the Rockies' both referring to the Rocky Mountains. The D&RGW operated the highest mainline rail line in the United States over the 10240 feet 3120 m Tennessee Pass in Colorado and the famed routes through the Moffat Tunnel and the Royal Gorge. At its height in the mid-1880s the D&RGW had the largest narrow-gauge railroad network in North America with 2783 miles 4479 km of track interconnecting the states of Colorado New Mexico and Utah" Wikipedia. A promotional work for the railroad this pamphlet is subtitled "A few testimonies of the results obtained from farming in this wonderful region." The text is comprised of letters written by real residents in this "Wonderland of the Northwest" noting bountiful crop yields and cheap land.
