189698132New York: E.C. Meinecke & Co. February 22nd 1896. 1896. Good. - An original 11 inch high by 7-1/2 inch wide gravure by E.C. Meinecke & Co. of New York on 15 inch high by 12 inch wide buff stock. The sienna toned image is a caricature of Chauncey Depew seated on a dock at Peekskill Landing fishing pole in hand and a string of fish at his side. Shaded by a Chinese straw hat with his feet dangling from the dock Depew is attired in a white button down shirt and capri-like pants. The menu's title "Lotos Club To Our Chauncey." is illustrated with the image of Depew's mansion and a banner of a winged locomotive pulling a train above. Depew's fishing pole with its line dipping into the lily pad pond at bottom left diagonally crosses the menu's selection while a train exiting a tunnel is depicted at bottom right. The menu engraved along the bottom left quarter of the image includes such offerings as Blue Points Chicken consomme a la Royal Timbales a la Depew Kennebec Salmon Asparagus a la Peekskill etc. The artist's name is engraved at the bottom right of the image. We can only make out the artist's initials "G.S." due to damage to a portion of the name. The gravure is boldly signed "Chauncey M. Depew" in pencil across the top. Mounted with glue from the verso onto a slightly larger cardboard mat there is a tear along the right edge of the print's border with some minor chipping and three holes along the left edge. There is minor foxing with a small spot of dampstaining to the top of the right border. The top edge of the heavier mat on which the print is mounted is chipped. Good. <p>RARE. Provenance: From the estate of American impresario and Medal of Honor recipient Major James B. Pond.<p>The Lotos Club with its literary and artistic bent hosted frequent "State Dinners" for which it produced elaborate souvenir menus.<p>At this dinner held in New York on February 22 1896 Chauncey Depew delivered a speech on the occasion of Washington's and Lincoln's Birthdays: ". Lincoln attained from the log cabin of the poor white in the wilderness the same position which George Washington reached from his grand old mansion and palatial surroundings on the Potomac. Widely as they are separated these two heroes of the two great crises of our national life stand together in representing the solvent powers of the inspiring processes and the hopeful opportunities of American liberty. The one coming from the top to the Presidency and the other from the bottom to the Presidency of the United States the leadership of the people the building up of government and the reconstruction of states they grandly illustrate the fact that under our institutions there is neither place nor time for the socialists or the anarchist but there is a place and always a time notwithstanding the discouragements of origin or of youth for grit pluck ambition honesty and brains".<p>The attorney for Cornelius Vanderbilt's railroad interests and president of the New York Central Railroad System Chauncey Depew 1834-1928 served as U.S. Senator from New York from 1899 to 1911. After graduating from Yale Depew was admitted to the bar in 1858 and first practiced law in Peekskill NY. Moving to New York City Depew first became the attorney for the New York and Harlem Railroad and subsequently for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad before he became the attorney and director of Vanderbilt's whole system. 188747384N.P.: Privately printed n.d. ca 1887. ca 1887. LAS VEGAS NEW MEXICO. 6" x 6 3/8" sheet folded to 4 panels. Cover panel as well as panel offering analysis of the water at the Phoenix Hotel written by Walter S. Haines M.D. printed in red and black ink. Opposite 2 panels offer a chromolithograph of the hotel. The Phoenix Hotel was "built in 1887 had 250 guest rooms and replaced the Montezuma Hotel which was destroyed by fire in 1884. In 1903 the hotel closed down and in 1923 the building became a Baptist college. In the late 1980s the site became the home of the Armand Hammer United World College and is now known as the Davis International Center. The hotel known as the castle was constructed by the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad as a luxury hotel featuring the natural hot springs on the site. According to the pamphlet the chemical composition of the water primarily consists of Carbonates and Sulphates of Sodium and was touted to assist with tuberculosis rheumatism and gout. 3/4" split to top fold along with a 1/2" water mark to top edge. 188724219Paterson NJ 1887. Photography. An imposing photograph of a Mogul Locomotive made by the Rogers Locomotive Company laid onto a printed broadside. The photograph measures 28 3/4 x 13" the broadside 32 x 18". Rogers Locomotive was an important New Jersey maker of railroad steam locomotives founded in 1832 whose most famous engine was "The General". This locomotive was built in 1855 and was one of the principals of the "Great Locomotive Chase" an April 1862 military raid in Georgia in which Union volunteers commandeered "The General" and used it to damage the vital rail line between Atlanta and Chattanooga. <br /> <br /> Below the image at the left is "J. Reid Photographist". John Reid 1835 - 1911 was a noted local photographer who specialized in stereoscopic views and large format outdoor photography especially pictures of locomotives. Reid was commissioned by Rogers to produce images of trains for promotional purposes. He used Scovill's view boxes made by the American Optical Company with Morrison wide aperture lenses and Scovill's pearl paper for printing. Reid printed his own pictures and relied on his own emulsion a superior one which wasn't subject to the rapid deterioration common in photographs of the time. Reid exhibited at Philadelphia's Centennial Exhibition in 1876 and received medals at the Paris Exposition 1878 and Chicago's Columbian Exhibition 1893. The broadside can be dated 1887 because Reuben Wells was appointed shop superintendent in that year; his name is stamped below the other printed printed names below the image which read "J. S. Rogers Pres. Reuben Wells Supt. and R. S. Hughes Treasurer 44 Exchange Place New York". The locomotive in the albumen photograph is marked "St. P. M. & M." and is numbered 324. This was the St. Paul Minneapolis & Manitoba Railway Company which was organized in 1879. Small paper fault at the lower center otherwise very good condition. unknown

A remarkable folio containing 17 large-scale draughtsman�s ink drawings of the Great Western Railway line between Tilehurst and Didcot England covering a 17-mile stretch at the extraordinary scale of 25 inches to the mile. Executed with meticulous precision these plans depict track layouts associated fields parish boundaries stations bridges and buildings as it passes the Thames River. Each sheet bears the stamp �Great Western Railway 25165 Engineers� Office Paddington� dated 1882 and initialled. The sequence begins with Sheet No. 37: �Parish of Tilehurst / Parish of St. Mary�s Reading� and concludes with Sheet No. 53: �Parish of Didcot / Parish of East Hagborne.� Of particular interest are the contemporary red ink annotations consisting of queries or requests for clarification likely in the hand of a senior engineer. These marginalia provide a rare insight into the working methods and exacting standards of the period. It forms an invaluable record of Victorian railway engineering practice. Beyond their technical value the drawings possess a striking aesthetic quality exemplifying the artistry of the 19th-century draughtsman. TransportationIndustrial Disasters Atlantic City railroad disaster photo archive likely documenting the July 30 1896 collision west of Atlantic City New Jersey one of the deadliest American railroad accidents of the 1890s. The wreck occurred when a West Jersey Railroad excursion train carrying members of the Improved Order of Red Men fraternal organization from Bridgeton and Salem crossed the Reading Railroad line and was struck by a Philadelphia express crushing loaded passenger coaches and leaving dozens dead and injured. The local Atlantic City photographer's stamp the beach and pier crowd the open rail junction the smashed wooden coachwork and the dense public gathering around the debris all support identification with the Atlantic City disaster rather than a more inland wreck. <br /> <br /> Photo archive of 4 albumen photographs each approx 7.5 x 8 inches mounted on boards measuring approximately 10 x 12 inches Atlantic City New Jersey likely 1896. At the wreck site men in suits caps work clothes and shirt sleeves stand among splintered timbers exposed wheel assemblies broken coach framing twisted metal and scattered railroad debris. A damaged passenger car remains partly upright with its roof torn open and side panels crushed while another wreck scene includes telegraph poles parallel tracks a railroad signal and a wide crowd gathered across the right of way. Workers and onlookers climb over the wreckage stand on overturned components and cluster around the remains of the coaches giving the scenes the character of both recovery work and public witnessing. The fourth view shows the community Atlantic City's shore economy with men women and children gathered along the beach and crowded across a pier many in formal summer dress hats and parasols. Verso stamp reads: "W. Crompton & Co. 132 N. South Carolina Ave. Atlantic City N.J. Duplicates can be furnished at Short Notice."<br /> <br /> By the 1890s Atlantic City had become a major East Coast resort town and railroad access was central to its growth; the same excursion system that filled its beaches also concentrated large numbers of passengers in wooden cars vulnerable to catastrophic collision. The presence of a local commercial photographer's stamp is significant indicating that these disaster scenes circulated as purchasable local views for an audience already accustomed to buying Atlantic City souvenirs. Mounts toned and soiled prints faded with some loss of contrast scattered surface wear and staining to mounts one with slight loss at upper right corner; overall in good condition. The archive preserves the immediate aftermath wreckage and response to a major Atlantic City disaster in the late 19th century. unknown

Wheat production stock raising soil and climate and other agricultural products are described along with information on Devil's Lake the Mouse River Valley the Turtle Mountain region Stump Lake etc. On verso the small map shows "The St. Paul Minneapolis & Manitoba Railway System and its Important Connections." The large map illustrates in detail the northwestern part of Minnesota from Breakenridge northward and east to include Barnesville Ada Crookston etc. and Dakota north from Wahpeton north and west to Ft. Stevenson on the Missouri River northward and includes southern Manitoba to Winnipeg. Also on this side is an extensive section of text describing "Government Lands and How to Get Them" with emphasis on pre-emptions homesteads and tree claims. Another large section entitled "Facts From a Farmer in North Dakota on the Line of the St. Paul Minneapolis & Manitoba R'y." In this section Mr. James Twamley a Grand Fork area farmer and wholesale grocer describes local agricultural production and recommends specific varieties of wheat oats corn squash beets cabbages carrots beans onions tomatoes asparagus cucumbers berries currants plums grapes potatoes and fodder corn. 1" closed tear to bottom edge of one panel splits at one fold and to top edge have been professionally repaired. The rear wrap is partially detached. The wraps have perhaps been discreetly glued to the spine. There are numerous losses from the paper of the spine and there are also some small losses from the edges of the wraps. In addition there are several short closed tears in the edges of the wraps. There are several very light moisture stains on the front wrap and there is a thin 1 and 1/4 inch tall light moisture stain on the fore edge of the rear wrap. Yellow endpapers. Frontispiece illustration. Spine sunned. Cloth at spine ends chipped. Underlying boards barely just beginning to peek through at corners. Free endpapers and recto of frontispiece mildly discolored. Short tape repairs to long closed tear on p. 140 no text is obscured. Loss to fore-edge margin of p. 163/64 again text not affected. Stitching visible in inside margins however binding very sturdy.<br /> <br /> Ex-libris James Cowan Smith with his bookplate depicting his beloved dog Callum on the front pastedown. James Cowan Smith 1843-1919 was a British civil engineer director of a railway company British Wagon and philanthropist. In his will he bequeathed what would now amount to roughly $4284000 to the National Gallery of Scotland to be used to expand its collection. The one stipulation was that the portrait of his dog Callum by John Emms was to be on permanent display in the museum.
