â€œOpportunity Knocksâ€: A Broadside Concerning the â€œUnmergerâ€ of the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads

Southern Pacific Company et al. declaring the Southern Pacific Companyâ€™s ownership of a controlling partâ€”46%â€”of the Central Pacific Railroadâ€™s stock in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act and requiring that this monopoly be dissolved. Offered here is a broadside produced by the Sacramento-based California Producers & Shippers Association which presents a collection of articles and editorials from area newspapers favorable to this â€œunmerger.â€ The broadside came in response to the Southern Pacific Companyâ€™s propaganda campaign against the dissolution; the Sacramento Tribune draws the readerâ€™s attention to: â€œthe efforts which have recently been made by the Southern Pacific Company to deceive their employees into protesting the separation of the Southern Pacific and Central Pacific on the ground that seniority and pension rights would be disturbedâ€. August 25 Several articles present a statement by P.R. Thompson chairman of the Peninsula Bureau Chamber of Commerceâ€™s Transportation Committee who accused Southern Pacific of having â€œdistributed a great amount of misinformation intended to becloud the issue and create oppositionâ€. Thompson called the claim that employees would lose seniority and pension rights the â€œMost flagrant and most apparently manufactured out of whole cloth.â€ Other articles note that Southern Pacific had been sending delegates to various Chambers of Commerce around the region to push resolutions against the dissolution. The Porterville Messenger writes: â€œChambers of Commerce are becoming suspicious of the sleek well mannered business like gentlemen who drop into town urge a meeting of directors make their discourse and expect to depart with a resolution in their pockets. Usually the proposed resolution will bear studyâ€” carefully. Just now the Colusa Chamber of Commerce is compelled to reverse itself on the S.P.-C.P. unmerger.â€ August 25 The Sacramento Bee described the efforts of these delegates as an â€œattempt to stampede public sentimentâ€ but claimed that Companyâ€™s â€œflood of propagandaâ€ had â€œutterly failed of its objectiveâ€ September 9. Whatever the actual public sentiment may have been in 1923 the Interstate Commerce Commission ordered that the railroads be allowed to remain merged. That year the federal governmentâ€”largely influenced by famously anti-labor Attorney General Harry M. Daughertyâ€”declined to appeal a district court decision overruling the Supreme Court in favor of the ICC. We find no record of this broadside in OCLC. From bustling Beijing to historic Hankow First edition first printing of this guide to the towns and counties traversed by the Peking-Hankow railroad China's first long-distance railway line and the lifeblood of the country's modernizing economy. Aimed at the armchair traveller and tourist alike the parts discuss scenery local customs important historical events and matters of cultural interest The Peking to Hankow railway was built as a co-operative venture between the Imperial Chinese Railway Company and the Belgian China Railway Survey Company. The German engineer Heinrich Hildebrand was engaged to survey the 1500-mile route and in June 1898 the contract was awarded to a Belgian syndicate. Bonds worth 112 million Francs were issued to French investors to raise the necessary finance. Construction began at both ends of the line and progressed at a rate of 500 metres per day. The first trains began to run on sections of the track in 1901 and in 1902 the Empress Dowager Cixi made her triumphant return to the capital using part of the line. Four years later construction was finally completed. An engineering triumph the project facilitated unprecedented levels of commercial and leisure travel between north and central China. The title evokes the long history of the Beijing and Hankow regions by referring to them as "Yan" and "Chu" the names of their equivalent Zhou dynasty states. This guide was issued the Peking-Hankow Railway Administration Chinese: Jinghan tielu guanli ju. In 1927 Chiang Kai-Shek's government established its capital at Nanjing and the name of the route was changed to "Beiping-Hankow Railway" providing a terminus ante quem for the date of publication.
