This work contains a massive amount of information relating to using railroads to transport mail across the continent. As part of the analysis in supporting railway mail service the special commission provides charts that show profits and expenses for 114 railroad companies and postal statistics between 1789 and 1877. The costs relating to delivering mail by rail are shown in a few ways including the transport costs per foot of train.
