These were intended to be portable easily inflated by a small group of United States Army Air Force personnel or Naval Personnel in order to protect against strafing attacks. John Wise (1808-1879?) was a pioneer in the field of ballooning. His first balloon ascension was May, 2, 1835. He perfected his flights over much of Lancaster County. His major fame came from his observations for the Union Army in the Civil War. He made over 400 flights during his lifetime and was responsible for several innovations in balloon design. Norimberga, 1720 circa. Incisione in rame all’acquaforte, colore d’epoca, cm 49 x 58,5 (alla lastra) più margini. Carta raffigurante la sfera armillare al centro e ai due lati, leggermente più in basso, sulla sinistra il globo celeste e sulla destra il globo terrestre. In basso, al centro, una didascalia di sei righe spiega che cosa sia e a che cosa serva la sfera artificiale. L’Autore (Kammlach, 1663 – Nuremberg, 1724) fu incisore e venditore di mappe. Esemplare in tenue coloritura ma con alcuni elementi realizzati in colore vivace (come allora si usava fare) una normale ma leggera patina di sporco del foglio con aluni aloncini presenti, nell’insieme in buono stato di conservazione. .
Augusta, 1730 circa. Incisione in rame all’acquaforte, colore d’epoca, cm 50,5 x 59 (alla lastra) più margini. Matthäus Seutter (1678 – 1757) è stato uno dei più importanti editori tedeschi di carte e mappe del XVIII secolo. Inizialmente attivo come incisore per Johann Baptist Homann e poi per Jeremia Wolff, intorno al 1717 fondò ad Augusta una propria casa editrice di cartografia. La maggior parte delle carte del Seutter sono basate su quelle di Homann ma ciò nonostante intorno al 1730 Seutter risultava fra gli editori più prolifici del suo tempo, fu onorato dall'imperatore Carlo VI con il titolo di Geografo Imperiale e la maggior parte delle sue carte includette la denominazione “Avec Privilege”. Seutter continuò a pubblicare fino alla morte che sopraggiunse nel 1757 quando egli era all'apice della carriera. Esemplare con alcune pieghe e strappi marginali, leggeri punti di sporco ai margini, in accesa coloritura (come allora si usava fare), discreto stato di conservazione.
