1979508662Mouton 1979. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. FINE/NEAR FINE. xxxvii 198pp. 8vo sewn binding in green cloth white stamped spine lettering. Exceedingly clean and sharp; DJ with just a bit of rubbing to the tips. 'Recently a great deal of attention has been directed at the Siwan al-Hikmah of Abü Salaimãn as-Sijistani as-Sijazi by some of our most outstanding Orientalists. This growing interest has focused on its importance for the history of Arabic philosophy especially in connection with the Greeks and has been manifested in a corresponding curiousity as to what its contents may be. Franz Ro-senthal has spoken of its crucial importance for Graeco-Arabic studies. Jörg Kraemer who demonstrated in a brilliant fashion that the Homeric citations in the Siwan al-Hikmah were in fact the vapar attributed to Menander has described the text in equally strong terms. However in spite of the fact that a number of good manuscripts of abridged or selected versions exist Muntakhab no complete copy of the original Siwan al-Hikmah is as yet known. The Muntakhab SiwÄn al-Hikmah dates from approximately A. D. 1200 whereas the original is of nearly the same date as the Fihrist of Ibn an-Nadim written in about 377/987 - or perhaps even earlier. While scholars wait for the complete original text to be recovered and made available it has seemed appropriate to the editor that a text of the Muntakhab together with some explication to assist in its understanding be supplied; the present volume is intended to provide immediate access to this critical text.' elala6192London: John Murray 1832. Second Edition. The sketches are dated Goderich March 1832. “Neither statistical nor truthful it was designed to attract the “better†class of settlers. Dunlop included ironic comments on the ‘delights’ of Canadian cookery and was unable to refrain from witty and sarcastic remarks on the internal divisions among Presbyterian bodies and on the connection between Methodists and politics.†Story William ‘Tiger’ Dunlop who had previously been posted to Upper Canada in 1813 as acting surgeon of the 89th Regiment returned in 1826 with John Galt in the service of the Canada Company settling just north of Goderich. In 1829 he became inspector of the company’s lands and settlements and in 1833 general superintendent. Becoming increasingly critical of the company he finally resigned in 1838. From 1841 to 1845 he sat for Huron in the Legislative Assembly and thereafter he was superintendent of the Lachine Canal. Morgan p113. William "Tiger" Dunlop 1792-1848 was one of the most colourful figures in Canadian history. He served in the War of 1812 as an assistant surgeon and settled in Canada in 1826 as an agent for the Canada Company. His witty engaging personality and drinking exploits are legendary. Dunlop never travelled without his "Twelve Disciples" eleven bottles filled with various potent substances and one bottle called "Judas" filled with water. His Statistical Sketches is an entertaining work mixing some small practical advice with much tomfoolery fully exploiting the author's humourous persona. He remarks for example in his chapter on climate that Upper Canada had the healthiest climate on earth as whisky could be purchased anywhere for a shilling a gallon. John Murray unknown
