This humorous letter was written to his long-time friend -- literary and art critic Sidney Colvin -- in his typical run-on sentence style in part: ".My children gave me your book on Christmas day.I cut it and dipped through it eagerly since which I have read three chapters I found however the thickness of the book not its weight strained and hurt my thumb & first finger in holding it so that I could read it comfortably of an evening in one hand with my pipe in the other as I like to do and have taken it to a nice little Scotch bookbinder at Brighton to bind it in two vols. splitting it at chapter ten which is near the middle & where the chapter comes on a fresh page. I may add that I greatly appreciate the good taste and skill with which it is written." From Introduction: Between the 20th of July and 17th of August 1986 the Miami Herald published a series of nine essays by its Pulitzer Prize nominee Beth Dunlop on the vanishing architecture of Florida. The essays carry the reader from Apalachicola to Key West from De Funiak Springs to Sarasota. They tell the tale of a Florida that in building its future is losing its past. It is a story of history being trampled disfigured and disguised. It is a sentimental journey that takes us to pioneer days to a less troubled past. It is a tale of naive tourism of grand and elegant hotels filled with fantasy. Contents: Introduction by Jose Gelabert-Navia; The Price of Progress; From Fishing Villages to Tourist Traps; Apalachicola -- Florida’s Living Museum; Roadside Architecture -- Last Relics of Early Tourism; The Grand Old Hotels -- Fading Fantasies; Homes of the Famous -- Who Owns History; Cross Creek -- A Survivor Amide the Subdivisions; Historical Sideshows; Languishing Landmarks; Four ARchitects -- Legacies Misunderstood; “Real Florida†Beware; Update; Index.
