Richard Hillary, studente di Oxford e pilota della RAF nei giorni della Battaglia d'Inghilterra, pubblica "L'ultimo nemico" pochi mesi prima di morire, a ventitré anni, durante un volo notturno. È il suo unico libro, si potrebbe definirlo reportage di guerra, memoria autobiografica e testimonianza generazionale, ma più di ogni altra cosa è il romanzo di formazione di un giovane che perde tutto e trova se stesso. Il pilota Richard è un individualista, un esteta scettico che si rende conto, poco alla volta, di essere parte dell'Umanità e di condividerne i dolori come le speranze. Dovrà prima lottare nell'aria con il nemico, vedere gli amici cadere uno dopo l'altro, attraversare le rovine di Londra, provare infine sulla propria carne il male della guerra. Durante la missione del 3 settembre 1940 viene abbattuto e precipita gravemente ustionato nel Mare del Nord. I duelli aerei lasciano allora il posto alla trafila degli interventi chirurgici, alla necessità di scrivere e al desiderio nascosto di tornare a volare.
