In-4 relié plein veau brun, dos lisse à fleurons allégoriques dorés, plats encadrés d'une guirlande de fines branches dorées, gardes de papier marbrés, roulette dorés intérieure, toutes tranches dorées. 38 pages + superbe estampe aquarellée de Antonio Césare de POGGI, dessinateur, peintre d'histoire et éditeur, dépliante au format de 38 x 51 centimètres (40 pouces x 26, mesure du pied d'Angleterre, datée du 25 may 1792, légendes en marge. L'estampe, dessinée sur place en 1783, est d'une très grande finesse, elle a été gravée par Mr. Pouncey, graveur anglais, travail qui a demandé plus de 7 années. En tête d'ouvrage, on trouve la liste des souscripteurs pour l'estampe (Le Roi et la Reine de Grande Bretagne, les noms des Altesses Royales, etc) sur 8 pages, s'en suit un avertissement à la date du 6 mai 1793 de 4 pages, puis "Lettre de Mr. Le Chevalier Foulis, Major de la Place de Gibraltar, sur la SORTIE faite par la Garnison de cette Place le matin du 27 novembre 1781, adressée à M+++.", 10 pages. Ensuite "Description alphabétique de l'Estampe représentant la sortie faite par la Garnison de Gibraltar dans la matinée du 27 novembre 1781", 11 pages . + Un tableau "Disposition et forces du détachement. Brigadier Général Ross". L'ouvrage se termine sur 2 pages de P.S. (post-sciptum), qui contient les remerciements de Mr. de Poggi à ceux qui lui ont apporté aide pour la résalisation de l'estampe. La reliure est un peu frottée, coins émoussés, petits manques de cuir en tête et en queue, l'exemplaire est à grandes marges, ne présente que quelques rousseurs en page de titre sans gravité, l'estampe présente une déchirure sans manque anciennement restaurée avec du papier collant, un petit trou sans manque à une pliure et une tache brune à une pliure en partie supérieure. Le dessin est d'une remarquable finesse. Malgré les petits défauts signalés, cet ouvrage très rare, est en bon état.

Printed on good paper. 56 pp 1 pp. <br/><br/><em>Extremely rare first edition of the official Danish naval and merchant marine code of conduct - laying out the articles of agreement for both officers and common sailors engaged in long-distance trading voyages especially to colonial outposts in the West Indies Guinea the Mediterranean – in this particular case dated 8 December 1780 officially certifying that these “Kongelige allernaadigste Skibs-Articler†were read aloud to the crew of the frigate by its commanding officer Captain Diderich von Holsten prior to departure for Tranquebar the Danish colony in India. The certification notes the ship's weapons 138 cannon and states that the crew had acknowledged the articles and promised to observe them on the voyage and until the ship's return. The document is signed by Captain Diderich von Holsten and the Waterschout including his red seal from Dutch “water inspector†a Danish official established in 1695 responsible for registering all seafarers departing from Copenhagen on merchant voyages. Documents like these had a very practical purpose and were considered of the utmost importance and were kept in offcial archives consequently they almost never finds their way into the trade. Written by Thomas Lewis O'Beirne 1748-1823 the Anglican divine whose first publication was the sermon he preached "An excellent sermon preached in St. Paul's Church New-York" NY 1776 as chaplin in Lord Howe's fleet at St. Paul's Chapel in New York after the disastrous fire in New York City of September 21 1776 probably set by Patriot arsonists. Upon his return to England in 1779 O'Beirne wrote a defense of Howe in "A Candid and Impartial Narrative of the Transactions of the Fleet ." L. 1779 and became more and more allied with the Whig party.<br /> <br /> This is his defense of Admiral Keppel in the politically charged dispute with Sir Hugh Palliser and Lord Sandwich over their actions in the engagement with the French fleet off the coast of Brest in July 1778. Charges and counter-charges flew over that indecisive and costly encouter Kessel being accused "misconduct and neglect of duty" and of not having done enough to finish off the crippled French fleet. Indeed a claim was made at the time "that had the French been defeated at the time a diplomatic mission to America giving them the opportunity to abandon the French treaty would not have failed" DNB Palliser on the other hand was accused of neglecting to obey an order to come to the support of the rest of the fleet. The dispute ultimately resulted in court-martials of both men resulting in the acquittal of each although Palliser was censured and ruined while Keppel refused to serve under the current Ministry. <br /> <br /> "The whole episode had severely weakened the standing of the Navy. Keppel asked not be sent to sea under the current Ministry and so the Admiralty retired him which led to a general resignation by his naval supporters depriving the Navy of many able officers in the continuing war against America." - DNB<br /> <br /> The first edition of O'Beirne's account of the two court martials although well represented in institutions is rare on the market; and only one copy of the 2nd edition has appeared at auction over the last 30 years. Occasional stains holes at bottom of both leaves not effecting text last page of text closely trimmed. A good copy. A four-page ballad describing the enormous storm experienced by the Spanish fleet in 1719 and of the miraculous preservation of the ships which eventually arrived safely in Cadiz. It was this same great fleet which Spain had gathered at Cadiz and Corunna for the invasion of the west of England directed by James Butler the attainted Duke of Ormonde.
