Mounts occasionally chipped photos generally fine. Good overall. Manuscript and photographic records of the U.S.S. Tennessee launched in July 1865. Originally named the U.S.S. Madawaska she was renamed Tennessee in 1869 and at the same time timbered up to the necessary height to allow a spar deck to be installed. She was also fitted with new more powerful engines at this time though she also bore a full complement of sails. Her duties included service as flagship of the Asiatic Squadron under Rear Admiral William Reynolds with Captain William W. Low in command. By 1879 she was flagship of the North Atlantic Squadron under Rear Admiral Robert W. Wyman with Captain David B. Harmony in command. These items pertain to both of these notable periods of service. The letter book contains compiled correspondences sent to Capt. William W. Low by the U.S. Naval Department and by Rear Admiral William Reynolds commander of the Asiatic Fleet stationed in Japan. The correspondences cover the period from June 1875 through June 1876 the duration of Low's time as captain of the Tennessee and generally contain orders or reports concerning the ship's maneuvers. The photograph album which was published by Hatton & Hart in New York bears the cover title "Scenes on Board a Man-of-War. U.S.S. Flag-Ship Tennessee" with an image of the ship stamped in gilt. It contains photos of the ship itself; of officers and the crew including Rear Admiral James E. Jouett and Captain O.F. Stanton; and of a few exercises aboard the ship. Chambliss 1809-1875; Sussex County Virginia plantation owner and member of the Confederate House of Representatives 1862-1865 was a member of the house Naval Affairs committee and William Porcher Miles 1822-1899; Mayor of Charleston South Carolina 1855-1857 U.S. House of Representatives 1857-1860 Confederate House of Representatives 1862-1865 was chairman of the house Military Affairs committee. This letter was written several months after the Confederacy's first torpedo boat the David made its initial attack against the Union ship New Ironsides in Charleston Harbor 5 October 1863 and two months before its second against the USS Memphis 6 March 1864. After two failed attempts at a sortie in 1863 losing 13 crew members in the process the Hunley became the first torpedo boat to actually sink a war vessel successfully completing its mission against the USS Housatonic in Charleston Harbor on February 17 1864. Cloth morocco backstrip; folio 400x260mm; approx. pp. 100 full of manuscript entries by a single hand with permanent instructions and headings in ink and crew member names and station designations in pencil; numerous additional blanks at rear. Nonetheless a trove of information. Lined paper listing the 614 men aboard assigning each a number gun and location Fore Castle Port Main Top Mizzen Top etc.; listing division and stations; and recording details of every situation that might occur on the ship see examples below. The ship is unnamed but it appears to be a ship of the Line or a Frigate which had 3 masts as well as some minimal amount of steam power. There were 6 African-American members of the crew all of whom were Union Sailors during the Civil War Edward Turner Joseph Davis and Thomas Mills from Maryland; Henry Andres from the West Indies; Joseph Gordan from New York; Samuel R. Whittaker from Buenos Aires. Three of these men served on the USS Minnesota which may help identify the ship. Also includes the ship's Fire Bill crew member stations of Making Sail from Single Anchor Mooring and Unmooring and much more. A rich volume worthy of further study. Cloth torn; front hinge cracked; first few signatures loose. Alittle faint waterstaining and soiling but generally nice and clean. <br/><br/> hardcover books

John W. Livingston 1804-1885 naval officer from New York City was the son of a naval surgeon William Turk in 1843 Turk and his wife Mary Livingston Turlk changed their name to Livingston. Livingston rose throught the service and untimately became Commodore during the Civil War and was promoted rear admiral in 1868. See DAB<br/><br/>The earliest letter here is a grant of one month's leave of absence to "Lieut. John W. Turk." In the form letter fromthe Dept. of Navy of 1855 the Acting Secretary of the Navy Charles W. Welsh summons Livingston to appear at a General Court Martial on board the "Receiving ship North Carolina at New York on the 28th day of April" 1855; and the letter from Captain Thomas A. Conover "Flag Officer Comdg U.S. Armed Force Coast of Afroca" conveys orders to Livingston then in command of the U.S.S. St. Louis to "proceed with all despatch to Cape Palmas on the West Coast of Africa and look after our interests in that quarter. unknown books

A chronicle of the short-lived Bank of the United States and its continued involvement in US Navy pensions. <br/><br/>After the demise of the Second Bank of the United States in 1836 a result of the historical "Bank War" between US President Andrew Jackson and Bank President Nicholas Biddle Biddle attempted to resuscitate the institution as a commercial bank chartered by the State of Pennsylvania. The former bank's stock holders except the US government voted to transfer the old bank's assets and liabilities to the new bank which made it difficult to disentangle the dealings of the defunct bank with the newly state-chartered bank. This letter from Secretary of the Navy Mahlon Dickerson discusses arrangements for The Bank of the United States to fund Navy Pensions and is an example of it's continued involvement with the US Government after the Second Bank of the United States charter had expired. Reading in part: <br/><br/>"I have received your letter of the 19th inst. and agree to the arrangement you propose that for the funds you may place at the disposal of this department for the payment of Navy Pensions credit shall be given on the Bond from the Bank of the United States chartered by the Legislature of Pennsylvania to the United States."<br/><br/>Written at the onset of the Panic of 1837 Biddle would fail to replicate the success he experienced as President of the Second Bank of the United States and resigned as President in 1839. The Bank of the Unites States failed in 1841. Biddle faced financial ruin and was arrested for fraud but was acquitted before his death in 1844. <br/><br/>Born in Hanover Township New Jersey Mahlon Dickerson 1770-1853 was a cavalry veteran of the Whiskey Rebellion who would go on to be elected Governor of New Jersey serve as US Senator receive two appointments as Secretary of the Navy and be confirmed as a judge for the United States District Court of New Jersey. unknown books

Here a Union sailor describes one of the last naval incidents of the war in which the CSS Webb made a desperate run down the Red River and the Mississippi in a bid for the open ocean before finally being scuttled by its crew past New Orleans. The unidentified author devoted most of his long letter to a description of the pursuit: "There has been a very dareing sic deed committed on this river since I wrote.All the men of war below us fired at her but did not hit her. She was going down the river at the rate of 30 miles an hour. There was a torpedo projecting from her bow. . . . The prevailing opinion here is that Jeff Davis or some other of the leaders of the Confederacy were on board. unknown books

This rare history was translated from the original Japanese report under the direction of Baron Y. Saneyoshi by S. Suzuki. Frontispiece photographic portrait of Baron Saneyoshi in full military uniform. Twenty-one full-page illustrations most of which are chromolithographs. Damp-stain around periphery of several color plates near the end but never close to the illustration. A number of black and white text illustrations and graphs. Chapters on battles and injuries brief history of the killed and wounded injury statistics causes of wounds and their classificationcomplications of wounds and management of the wounded. The first book documenting the treatment of the wounded on ships since the modern revolution in naval warfare. This treatise was inspired by the "Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion" following the American Civil War with typography and illustrations in a similar style. String-tied with promotional card 1 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches for Piso's Cure for Consumption and Piso's Remedy for Catarrh. A handsome group of American chromolithographs produced as part of a promotion for Piso medicinal products. The illustrations show an ocean steamer a Long Island Sound steamer a Mississippi River steamboat and various sailing yachts and schooners. Each of the eight types of identified vessels are illustrated with two copies of the same image facing each other printed in a single tone on the left and as a chromolithograph on the right. The single tone image also includes text indicating the type of ship and identifying parts of the vessel such as the different sails. The pamphlet was produced as a promotion for Piso's Cure for Consumption and Piso's Remedy for Catarrh both available in drugstores or by mail. The promotional card indicates that the album could be obtained for "three outside wrappers taken from bottles of Piso's Cure for Consumption or for one wrapper from a package of Piso's Remedy for Catarrh. Or it will be sent for 30 cents in cash or postage stamps." <br> <br> A fine informative and presumably rare example of advertising ephemera from the last quarter of the 19th century. unknown books

The strait is now known as the Solent. Chips to margin and toning. The Isle of Wight is a county and the largest and second-most populous island in England. It is in the English Channel about 2 miles 3.2 km off the coast of Hampshire separated by the Solent. During the Seven Years' War the island was used as a staging post for British troops departing on expeditions against the French coast such as the Raid on Rochefort.
