2078Five thick vols each printed on heavy laid paper. 8vo 230 by 150 mm uniformly bound ca. 1847 by the atelier of the Imprimerie Royale for the Prince Royal Louis-Charles-Philippe-Raphaël d'Orléans Duc de Nemours 1814-1896 in crimson straight-grained morocco minor & skillful repairs to several joints sides and smooth spines richly gilt in the style of the "Rocaille Louis-Philippe" the solid tools on covers connected with curved triple fillets in centers the initials "LO" surrounded by a laurel wreath and surmounted by the royal crown OHDR fer 2 inside gilt roll borders light-blue watered-silk liners and endleaves a.e.g. Paris: Imprimerie Royale 1838-39-40-42-43. This magnificently bound five volume catalogue is to a large extent tantamount to a bibliography of French naval and colonial history describing 17108 works printed up to 1842 plus approximately 3000 later acquisitions short-title listed in the index only. It was compiled under the supervision of Louis Marie Bajot 1775-d. "after 1854" Inspector General of the library of the ministry of the French navy in collaboration with Angliviel in charge of the ministry's library of maps and charts. The compilation of the catalogue required remarkable cooperation of numerous librarians in Paris the ports and far-flung places such as Pondicherry and Guadeloupe. The catalogue in fact lists the contents of no less than eleven libraries belonging to the Ministère de la Marine: its main library and the Dépot général des Cartes et Plans in Paris; the libraries of the naval bases at Cherbourg Brest Lorient Rochefort and Toulon; and the naval hospitals of these ports except for Lorient. It also gives a list of six colonial naval libraries. In all cases the names of the librarians in charge and their salaries are given interestingly Bajot's was 7000 frs while Angliviel's was more than double at 18000 frs per year. This information is repeated in the preliminary matters of each volume. The catalogue itself preferably describes the copies of the two Paris libraries otherwise those in one of the other nine libraries; three columns indicate the symbols and shelf numbers of the eleven libraries in three columns headed "Ports" "Hôspitaux" and "Paris." During the Restoration and especially under Louis-Philippe the binding atelier of the Imprimerie Royale under the direction of a certain Courtois bound the official publications of the Imprimerie in good calf bindings for the ministries and in richly gilt deluxe morocco for the King and the Crown Prince the Duc de Nemours second son of Louis-Philippe had succeeded his elder brother on his death in 1842 as Prince Royal. These binding for the Duc de Nemours are particularly successful for the handsome treatment to the wide spines. The Duc de Nemours who was himself an important book collector was greatly interested in the Navy and especially the colonies having participated in the conquest of Algeria. His library was dispersed many years after his death in 1931-32. A late 16th-century manuscript listing of Admirals and Lord High Admirals of the British fleet from the reigns of Edward II to Elizabeth I. <br/>The manuscript comprises 115 entries each 6-10 lines in length with transcriptions of the letters patent associated with each appointment. It was compiled during the reorganization of the admiralty office by John Hawkins just 2 years after the English victory over the Spanish Armada. We locate three other copies of this document: two at the British Library in the Harliean collection 6843.30 and the Cottonian manuscripts collection and a third in the National Maritime Museum the latter two copies were extended at a later date into the early 17th century.<br/>Despite its title the manuscript opens with the appointments of Thomas de Coleton in 1264 during the reign of Henry III and William de Leiburn in 1286 during the reign of Edward I. The text includes a bevy of rules expense guidelines and more and offers a fine window into the near-obsessive attention to detail that marked the administration of the Spanish military at the peak of its powers. <br> <br> Of particular interest are several pen and ink sketches that include tools a ship in dry dock and storage bins as well as two much larger harbor plans of Palermo and Naples. Each drawing is keyed to a printed description of the location and shows fortifications lookouts and in the case of Naples dormitories. These are charming and well accomplished. <br> <br> Good evidence of the Spanish navy at work at the height of empire with rules which certainly applied to vessels in the Americas as well. Covers a little scuffed along spine and edges otherwise fine -- bold and bright. <br/><br/>A compilation of various accounts relating to the Russian Navy and Air Force in the decade following the Revolution recorded in tidy penmanship and with quick watercolors painted direct in text plus nicely accomplished pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations tipped-on showing landscapes sea-scapes portraits and air and sea vessels. The accounts report the travails of various ships including the "Prome" "Paris Commune" "Frunze" the ice-breakers "Ermak" and "Lenin" and others. One part is devoted mostly to the Turkish Fleet and action in the Black Sea during 1914-1917. The aeronautic sections discuss Zeppelin's dirigible and the British R-101. The journal lists various contributors including F. Raskol'nikov L. Berman A. Marti P. Stasevich and others. S. Sheff who drew the illustrations probably produced this journal issuing it over the course of a number of years; the present issues are numbered 3 4 11 and 13 and belong to the fourth year of composition. First 82cm x 60cm ca 32" x 24"; embroidered in silk with trapunto elements on a black silk ground; photographic portrait on cabinet card inserted in embroidered pocket at center inscribed "Mellie McKeever" on verso. Silk ground fragile with a few thin tears but no significant losses; light soil; embroidered portions generally well-preserved and colors bright. Very Good. Second banner 65cm x 50cm ca 25" x 20"; photo-transfer on silk with embroidered ornaments. Slight fading to embroidered portions but generally well-preserved and sound; Very Good. Both banners with firm provenance purchased from the descendants of Mellie McKeever of Richwood West Virginia. Two exceptional and well-preserved examples of the ornamental trapunto banners that were popular souvenirs among U.S. sailors and marines during the late 19th and early 20th century. Yokohama was the principal point of production for these naval souvenirs but we have also seen examples from the Philippines and mainland China; Japanese examples such as these are generally distinguished by a higher quality of embroidery and more sophisticated composition. The banners became popular among British and American sailors beginning as early as the Boxer Rebellion and the Spanish-American War but seem to have reached their peak of popularity with the arrival in the Far East of Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet in 1908. Some 14000 sailors and marines made land at various Japanese ports-of-call in that year and given the regularity with which these textiles still appear one imagines that every sailor must have brought at least one of these souvenirs home with him. <br/><br/>The first example though of an unusually impressive size is of a type frequently seen displaying typical naval iconography right down to the hand-painted battleship portrait of a two-stack battleship of the Kearsarge class its hull painted white reflecting its peace-time mission at bottom center. The embroidered frame to hold a cabinet portrait of the sailor or perhaps a loved one is a typical feature found on more elaborate examples. The American Eagle in full battle stance is a nearly universal element of these banners. <br/><br/>The second banner is of a style we have not previously seen and for which we can find no analogues in the extensive literature of naval souvenirs. It is clearly a family portrait probably a composite made from cartes-des-visites carried by McKeever; the portraits are printed by silkscreen using a photo-transfer process with applied trapunto decorations. The likenesses are clearly enlarged -- it is highly unlikely that a common sailor would have had room aboard a battleship to carry full-size portraits -- and it strikes us that this must have seemed an almost magical process at the time of creation especially to a young man from a tiny lumber-and-coal town in central West Virginia. <br/><br/>Aside from their obvious virtues as objects of art and handicraft we regard these banners as compelling pieces of material culture from a period of tremendous social transformation in the United States. According to the Naval Historical Center U.S. naval rolls expanded by nearly 400% between the beginning of the Spanish-American War and the launching of the Great White Fleet. To meet this demand for the first time in its history the Navy began recruiting from the American heartland rather than solely from the Eastern Seaboard states. The generation of inland farmers and mechanics to follow was thus the first in American history to experience first-hand cultures as diverse and divergent from their own as those of Europe Asia and the Pacific Islands; they represented not only the beginning of the American imperialist enterprise but also the first stirrings of America's global consciousness. That so many of these banners have survived in good condition is evidence of the degree to which they were treasured by their owners for whom they represented an experience that must have been transformative and definitive. unknown books

Mounts occasionally chipped photos generally fine. Good overall. Manuscript and photographic records of the U.S.S. Tennessee launched in July 1865. Originally named the U.S.S. Madawaska she was renamed Tennessee in 1869 and at the same time timbered up to the necessary height to allow a spar deck to be installed. She was also fitted with new more powerful engines at this time though she also bore a full complement of sails. Her duties included service as flagship of the Asiatic Squadron under Rear Admiral William Reynolds with Captain William W. Low in command. By 1879 she was flagship of the North Atlantic Squadron under Rear Admiral Robert W. Wyman with Captain David B. Harmony in command. These items pertain to both of these notable periods of service. The letter book contains compiled correspondences sent to Capt. William W. Low by the U.S. Naval Department and by Rear Admiral William Reynolds commander of the Asiatic Fleet stationed in Japan. The correspondences cover the period from June 1875 through June 1876 the duration of Low's time as captain of the Tennessee and generally contain orders or reports concerning the ship's maneuvers. The photograph album which was published by Hatton & Hart in New York bears the cover title "Scenes on Board a Man-of-War. U.S.S. Flag-Ship Tennessee" with an image of the ship stamped in gilt. It contains photos of the ship itself; of officers and the crew including Rear Admiral James E. Jouett and Captain O.F. Stanton; and of a few exercises aboard the ship. Rare surviving copy of the first survey of electronic digital computers in the U.S. organized by pioneering mathematician Mina Rees. The only first edition on the market this is a title that has never before sold at auction and is listed by OCLC at only 10 institutions.<br/><br/>In her introduction to the survey Rees notes that "Until recently all commercially available general-purpose digital computers were large and cost many hundreds of thousands of dollars. Within the past year however a number of manufacturers have smaller more compact usually slower automatic computers for sale at less than one hundred thousand dollars." Because this change opened the door to a wider variety of businesses and firms accessing computers Rees points to the symposium as being timely and necessary. In this space and this historic moment scientists mathematicians manufacturers and government agencies could consider how to continue improving and reducing cost on the machines; and they could consider their wide applicability across fields. Rees herself a luminary who became the first woman president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science is featured in this survey among other notables including Albert Auerbach and Richard E Sprague. The papers include work the MINIAC the Elecom and the Circle Computer. These were the first of their kind as was the symposium itself. Complete with over 20 black and white photos charts and diagrams it is an important and rare piece documenting computers' shift into the necessary and ubiquitous technology they are today.<br/><br/>Origins of Cyberspace 853. Chambliss 1809-1875; Sussex County Virginia plantation owner and member of the Confederate House of Representatives 1862-1865 was a member of the house Naval Affairs committee and William Porcher Miles 1822-1899; Mayor of Charleston South Carolina 1855-1857 U.S. House of Representatives 1857-1860 Confederate House of Representatives 1862-1865 was chairman of the house Military Affairs committee. This letter was written several months after the Confederacy's first torpedo boat the David made its initial attack against the Union ship New Ironsides in Charleston Harbor 5 October 1863 and two months before its second against the USS Memphis 6 March 1864. After two failed attempts at a sortie in 1863 losing 13 crew members in the process the Hunley became the first torpedo boat to actually sink a war vessel successfully completing its mission against the USS Housatonic in Charleston Harbor on February 17 1864. This work includes conversations with El Libertador Simon Bolivar shortly before his death in 1830. Also includes descriptions of travel in Venezuela Colombia and parts of the Caribbean. In addition to being an officer he played hymns every Sunday at church was an avid wood carver and a loving father. The album consists of various sized photographs approx. 5" x 7" to 10" x 8". There is a staggering amount of ephemera relating to his service on various ships visiting places such as Japan India Goa China and various European cities. Images include local scenes maratime subjects life at port monuments friends and family group shots of fellow navy men &c. &c. &c. Of note are the the shots of navy vessals and a panorama of Hong Kong lit up at night. Sudell was invited to some very high profile events in India as well as the UK. The albums is throughouly annotated made with great attention to detail also included are many ms letters. Over 400 items. Also 8 b/w RPPCs 2 half-tones and various negatives color printed certificates postcards etc. Most text on 10-1/2" x 8" leaves. <br/><br/>A collection of material detailing career sailor and struggling writer Arthur Gordon’s attempts to find work in the Merchant Marine during the height of the Great Depression as well as his considerable efforts to set aside time for writing and honing his craft. Gordon served as a lieutenant in the Navy during WWI as Chief Writer on the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey Oceanographer during the early 1930s and again as an officer in the U.S. Navy during WWII eventually attaining the rank of commander; his stories of sea life were published in various popular magazines primarily during the 1940s. Gordon is an introspective writer with a good if sometimes uneven sense of how to turn his experiences and thoughts into an often humorous and lightly self-mocking story particularly in "Notes upon leaving the Coast Survey and looking for employment as a Merchant Mate Jan 5 - June 14 1935" a 63 pp autobiography of these experiences written in the third person. "Notes" offers a highly detailed account of Gordon's experiences as an unemployed seaman during the Depression and life aboard an oil tanker when his attempt to gain a position as a 3rd Mate didn't work out: "Las Piedras is an oil tank town with a single narrow dock extending from the shore providing bollards for tying up the ships and supports for the pipe lines. The town is small and I think exists only because of the oil tanks for the location has no charm otherwise. The white oil men live as colonials in an impoverished outpost. They take what stores they need from the steward's supplies aboard ship. Loading is done by gravity since the storage tanks ashore are on the cliff." The letters roughly divided between copies of correspondence sent from Arthur to his friends and letters sent to Arthur from his parents show Gordon to be an enthusiastic and encouraging friend to multiple young men and a few women as well as a dutiful son whose unemployed parents relied heavily on his earnings. Of some note as well are a handful of thoughtful if conflicted references to homosexuality with at least one of Gordon's male friends appearing to have a crush on him and hints that Gordon may have been in gay relationships himself and/or struggled with his sexuality: "…. I quite fully agree with you concerning the chemical make-up of man and the push and pull of attraction or dislike. I have had occasion to study what it is that draws me to which I react most noticeably and I am continually dismayed that usually it is the ‘wrong’ thing. . I’m skeptical of any kind of relation that presupposes permanency. Knowing myself I feel that ‘vows’ would soon be broken. I cannot stand constant association. Routine maddens me. The merest suggestion of ‘chain’ of compulsory anything and I’m off. I don’t think hetero marriages are particularly successful and I don’t think homo are either for almost the same reasons. I don’t mind the companionate idea with women. With men I fight shy. I am getting to the age where in others I condemn homo as degeneracy. I mean that among young people it seems almost natural as a manifestation of excess love as an overflow which can be handled without social consequences. At 45 it’s greasy and quite awful. Consider the advanced homos you know . . . Am I right I am not dictating here; nor dogmatizing. I hope to start a discussion. Homos are interesting to me because I find that along with it is usually an unidentified awareness and an understanding of life unequalled in the stolid conventionites. Image measures 19" x 27.5"<br/><br/> This unusual circa 1800 sea chart by the Depot de la Marine depicts the Saigon River in modern day Vietnam. The map divided into two sections follows the course of the river from Saigon City Ho Chi Minh City south to the mouth of the Saigon River and Vung Tau. The port of Candiu is identified on the coast of Tsiompa. Tsiompa refers to the ancient Indochinese kingdom of Champa which existed between the 2nd and 17th century. Vountao Vung Tao is exceptionally detailed with beautifully rendered topography to the level of individual fields and plantations. Depth soundings are labeled though out the river and coastal features are noted. The Royal Palace of Saigon is also detailed.<br><br>Vung Tau originally known as Tam Thang earned its name which means 'anchorage' after European trading ships started frequenting the region during the 14th and 15th centuries. During the late 18th and early 19th century Malay pirates made this a base. The French Indochinese government named it Cap Saint-Jacques also noted here. The map is in good condition with minimal wear along the original centerfold. Minor offsetting and some spotting in the margins. Wide margins with original plate mark visible.<br><br>Depot General de la Marine was a French hydrographic mapping organization similar to the United States Coast Survey or the British Admiralty. Some of the important cartographers associated with the Depot include Jacques Nicholas Bellin and Riobert Bonne. Courts Martial of Keppel & Palliser during the American Revolution. Written by Thomas Lewis O'Beirne 1748-1823 the Anglican divine whose first publication was the sermon he preached "An excellent sermon preached in St. Paul's Church New-York" NY 1776 as chaplin in Lord Howe's fleet at St. Paul's Chapel in New York after the disastrous fire in New York City of September 21 1776 probably set by Patriot arsonists. Upon his return to England in 1779 O'Beirne wrote a defense of Howe in "A Candid and Impartial Narrative of the Transactions of the Fleet ." L. 1779 and became more and more allied with the Whig party.<br/><br/>This is his defense of Admiral Keppel in the politically charged dispute with Sir Hugh Palliser and Lord Sandwich over their actions in the engagement with the French fleet off the coast of Brest in July 1778. Charges and counter-charges flew over that indecisive and costly encouter Kessel being accused "misconduct and neglect of duty" and of not having done enough to finish off the crippled French fleet. Indeed a claim was made at the time "that had the French been defeated at the time a diplomatic mission to America giving them the opportunity to abandon the French treaty would not have failed" DNB Palliser on the other hand was accused of neglecting to obey an order to come to the support of the rest of the fleet. The dispute ultimately resulted in court-martials of both men resulting in the acquittal of each although Palliser was censured and ruined while Keppel refused to serve under the current Ministry. <br/><br/>"The whole episode had severely weakened the standing of the Navy. Keppel asked not be sent to sea under the current Ministry and so the Admiralty retired him which led to a general resignation by his naval supporters depriving the Navy of many able officers in the continuing war against America." - DNB<br/><br/>The first edition of O'Beirne's account of the two court martials although well represented in institutions is rare on the market; and only one copy of the 2nd edition has appeared at auction over the last 30 years. First appearance in print of Marina Tsvetaeva's epic poetic cycle about the October Revolution and the ensuing Russian Civil War which the poet experienced first-hand in Moscow before emigrating in 1922. The poems were written before her emigration while her husband Sergei Efron was fighting against the Bolsheviks in the Volunteer Army. According to the preface by Gleb Struve Tsvetaeva herself had planned to publish these texts as one book in 1928 but was unable to do so. In 1939 she handed the manuscript over to a professor at Basel University who made them available to Struve after the war. Scarce in the trade. unknown books

Rolph's time spent abroad in the navy during WWI including many cartoons about military life. "Just little clippings and sketches picked up here and there and put in here to look back on some day and think of the days spent on the water. SFRolph. 1918." Below is a newspaper clipping about the owner of the logbook dated 9-13-18 "Henry D. Rolph and Samuel F. Rolph who are not in the radio section of the navy are now overseas."<br/><br/>Towards the end of the book is a notable entry from Armistice Day November 11 1918. "We were all excited and wondering who would get the honor of copying the "dope" about the signing of the armistice. All were willing to stand over our watch a little while. Here copied it. 1pm. I was at chow. When I cam back I copied a little regarding it also. All the whistles bells horns in the harbor were going full blast and I thought tot myself that must have been the way they all felt when old Liberty Bell was rung in 1776. It certainly was impressive even amid the chaos. For it meant a great deal." The discovery of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and our modern understanding of plate tectonics and continental drift has been attributed to Tharp - although at the time she was often uncredited for her work. Bruce Charles Heezen 1924 %u2013 1977 was an American geologist. Under Tharp's influence he gave up the idea of an expanding earth for a form of continental drift. Tharp was Heezen's assistant while he was a graduate student. When she showed Heezen that her plotting of the North Atlantic revealed a rift valley Heezen dismissed it as "girl talk". She persisted and they eventually discovered that not only was there a North Atlantic rift valley but a mountain range with a central valley that spanned the earth. Lined paper listing the 614 men aboard assigning each a number gun and location Fore Castle Port Main Top Mizzen Top etc.; listing division and stations; and recording details of every situation that might occur on the ship see examples below. The ship is unnamed but it appears to be a ship of the Line or a Frigate which had 3 masts as well as some minimal amount of steam power. There were 6 African-American members of the crew all of whom were Union Sailors during the Civil War Edward Turner Joseph Davis and Thomas Mills from Maryland; Henry Andres from the West Indies; Joseph Gordan from New York; Samuel R. Whittaker from Buenos Aires. Three of these men served on the USS Minnesota which may help identify the ship. Also includes the ship's Fire Bill crew member stations of Making Sail from Single Anchor Mooring and Unmooring and much more. A rich volume worthy of further study.
