1900162288London: John Murray 1900. First and only contemporary edition of this interesting and engaging biography of "one of the most distinguished soldiers of the Tirah campaign" Nevill p. 303 described by Lord Methuen as "the best leader of men I ever saw". Increasingly uncommon on the market. John Haughton 1852-1898 was the son of Lt.-Col. John Colpoys Haughton "the staunch defender of Charikar in 1841 whose name is known but to the few serious students of Indian Frontier warfare" p. ix. In India the younger Haughton commanded the 36th Sikhs during the 1897-1898 Tirah campaign to subdue part of the Indian frontier. In the last major battle of the campaign Haughton was killed by sheer overwhelming numbers. A plaque in the chapel at Uppingham School commemorates Haughton's death "while boldly defending a position to the last against overwhelming odds". The present work also contains a detailed description of the famous engagement at Saragarhi where 21 members of Haughton's 36th Sikhs were involved in an heroic last stand against 10000 Afghans. The day is still celebrated by Sikhs and commemorated by the British and Indian armies with the Saragarhi Challenge Cup polo match. Arthur Campbell Yate 1853-1929 served for three years from 1875 with the 1st West India Regiment before transferring to the Bombay Staff Corps. He took part in the Second Anglo-Afghan War 1878-80 later serving on the Afghan Boundary Commission and Third Anglo-Burmese War 1885. He travelled extensively in Persia Central Asia 1879-81 and the Caucasus was a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and wrote several books including England and Russia Face to Face in Asia 1887 and The Army and the Press 1901. The first voyage stretched seven weeks through the Mediterranean and into the Atlantic to Shoreham UK including stops at Barcelona Tarragona Valencia Cartagena Alicante Malaga Gibraltar Cadiz Lagos Lisbon Vigo Santander Bayonne Bordeaux La Pallice Le Palais Brest and Jersey Island. At the start of the first trip the party learned that the captain hired for the cruise “threw a 3 days’ drunk so G.ilbert after a consultation with the Consular shipping agent paid him off and engaged Captain Lafuebre.†Reginald Beale’s 1877-1952 cruise narrative while chatty often refers to the less than stellar weather and uninspiring ports visited such as when referring to Marseille that “every wheeled vehicle is fitted with a bulb horn which the drivers use with irritating frequency. . . the wind the dusts the lack of paint and in excess of poster the shabbiness.†In Barcelona he writes about the night life at the “Eden†that they “sat down to a procession of homely women who snapped castanets sang songs which no one seemed to appreciate and danced Spanish fashion by wriggling the body and stamping the feet.†The photos depict ships & sailing yachts points of interest the beaches at Santander Canadian canoes at Bordeaux the Saint-Philibert ferry and more. Even with the disappointments of “dull people and duller towns†they all enjoyed the great adventure. The second voyage sets out from Southampton to Cannes in the “Angela†in 1934 where it was sold to Mr. & Mrs. Roditi and they returned via the RMS Strathnaver a P&O Steam Navigation Co. ocean liner launched originally in 1931. After leaving Southampton in the evening and viewing Bournemouth the Angela rolled so heavily in the middle of the night that they fastened everything down and rode it out until arriving in Brest. He has included photos of the La Reine des Anges sailing vessel the Artiglio merchant ship at Brest the three-masted “Galatea†at Ferrol as well as the Jaime I Spanish dreadnought battleship launched in 1921 the HMS Ramillies and writes about listening to the launching of the RMS Queen Mary Sept. 26 1934. November 1813 - 22nd March one letter repaired without loss occasional dust marks stitching loose in places spine defective In the letter of c. November 1813 Yate recalls to the Countess "the Difference. which existed between Lady B: & Captain Ashe & which ended in the abortion of a work composed by that celebrated & ingenious Writer on purpose & written under the sanction of Lady B: & which now Mr. Y: conceives is in her possession. The Mss: Mr. Y: has purchased. originated from that untoward circumstance & tho' compiled perhaps under the irritation of conceived ill-usage & disappointed hopes yet Mr. Y: fearlessly asserts it is a classical interesting & well-founded work; & which the terrors of the Law cannot suppress.". Later he concedes that the "Romance. certainly appeared" to refer to "a public occurrence the revival of which. might be painful to the family" 8th March 1814. The beautiful and capable Lady B. was the daughter of the local butcher. She married the 5th Earl in 1796 having previously borne him four sons. After her husband died in 1810 it is rumoured that she received an offer of marriage from the Duke of Clarence. The "public occurrence" no doubt was the failure in 1811 of Col. Berkeley to establish his claim to the Earldom. It was held that the 5th Earl had falsified the parish register to make Col. Berkeley appear born in wedlock. Yate asks Cocker not to reveal his address as he is avoiding his creditors. With a checklist. Item Date Page From To 1813: 1. Sun. Nov. 49 Yate Oxford Lady Berkeley. 1814: 2.
