PROVENANCE: From paste down has Chippendale armorial bookplate of the original owner Robert Gorges Dobyns Yate esq. of Bromesberrow 1752-1785; who married Annabella Christiana Honywood in 1775 only daughter of William Honywood esq. of Malling Abbey in Kent. His name in hand written on the front flypaper "B. Yate. 1773. Below this is the signature of his wife with the date of 1785 the year of her husband's death. Another ink note further below I am unable to read. The title page has inked initial on the upper margin. <br /> <br/><br/>Questions welcome. Images can be made upon request. 19019The three items on letterheads of Beckbury Hall Shifnal. Postcard: 5 March 1915. Letters: 10 and 13 December 1916. According to his long obituary in The Times 13 June 1929 'Central Asian Politics' Yates's 'studies of the affairs of the Indian borderland Central Asia and the Middle East were probably excelled by few retired officers of the Indian Army in wealth of detail and personal knowledge of events and personalities spread over the last half-century'. See also his long entry in Who Was Who. The three items are in fair condition on aged and worn paper with rusting from paperclip. They carry the stamp and docketing of the Society. The card - signed 'A. C. Yate Lt. Col.' - concerns 'the corrected proof of my lecture on "The Indian Army"'. Both letters totalling 3pp. 12mo concern the manuscript of a lecture he proposes giving - following 'a little discussion' at St John's Gate - on the work of the Indian branch of the Red Cross as 'the Society of Arts meditate a lecture on the Ambulance Work of the War'. Accompanying the three items is a Typed Letter Signed 1p. 4to to Wood from Major W. O. Prichard Chief Secretary The St. John Ambulance Association 28 December 1916 on its St John's Gate letterhead sending at Yate's request a copy of the annual report of the Indian Branch which shows 'what wonderful work has been done by the representatives of the Association in India both in connection with the war and among the civil population'. First edition of this uncommon maritime account of the career life of the USS Yankton which began life as the steam yacht Cleopatra was purchased and reported for duty as a gunboat with the North Atlantic Fleet in 1898 engaged in shelling several Spanish gunboats and later pursued the Spanish Auxiliary Cruiser Alfonso XII. She later served as a survey ship in Cuba was tender to the USS Maine the Atlantic Fleet battleship and accompanied the Great White Fleet around the World and later as tender during World War I in the North Atlantic. She was decommissioned and sold in 1921 and spent two years as a rum runner eventually being seized and put back into the US Merchant Fleet in 1923.
