Herreshoff owning both a sloop and a catamaran one of only two in the club. Extremely rare survival WorldCat shows Brown holding a copy of the 1876 issue and no others. Duodecimo 152 x 108 mm. Club badge verso of title page. Sewn as issued in the original violet printed glazed card wrappers. A little rubbed and oiled a couple of chips from the lower panel of the wrappers contemporary inked docketing as a duplicate to the upper panel light toning but a very good copy. A smartly bound first edition of this detailed and illustrated account of the Church Missionary Society's formation in New Zealand written by one of the earliest New Zealand missionaries the Rev. William Yate. First edition. Rebound in cloth with the endpapers renewed. Illustrated with a folding map and ten plates one of which is hand coloured.Collated complete. The work of the Rev. William Yate an English Christian missionary working for the Church Mission Society. Yate arrived in New Zealand in 1828 and quickly introduced himself to the Maori community after previously learning the language. Yate brought with him a small printing press notable for being the first press in New Zealand with which he produced a version of the third catechism in Maori. This work covers the formation and progress of the Church Missionary Society in New Zealand however it also presents the customs geography nature and history of the country. Yate continued to work for the mission until 1834 when he was dismissed due to controversial reports of his sexual encounters with a number of young Maori men.With a few ink notations from a previous owner. Rebound in cloth with the endpapers renewed. Externally excellent with light wear to the extremities and the odd mark. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots to the first few pages and heavier spots to the folding map. A few ink notations from a previous owner to the margins. 1896113611Oldham: W. E. Clegg 1896. Octavo three volumes original pictorial brown cloth spine panels stamped in gold t.e.g. other edges untrimmed. First edition. Posthumously published collection of sketches and stories in memory of the much-loved Lancashire writer born at Failsworth near Manchester in 1825. The son of a hand loom weaver Brierley went to work in the silk mills at the age of six. Village Sunday and night schools helped him win an education. He began publishing tales verse and sketches of Lancashire life in the 1850s. He became a writer and journalist and in 1869 founded the popular BEN BRIERLEY'S JOURNAL a weekly which ran until 1891. He died in 1896 at the age of 71. See Sutherland Victorian Fiction pp. 83-84 and DNB. Wolff 815.
