Overall contents well preserved. <br/><br/>The classroom lecture notebook of an unnamed cadet at The United States Army School of Aeronautics at Ohio State University Columbus OH covering January through March 1918. During WWI a pilot shortage in the United States became apparent. In response the War Department and U.S. Army formed the Aviation Cadet Training Program installing aviation training schools at six universities across the country. This program at Ohio State appears to have consisted of 8 weeks of classes with training in military drill discipline and technical instruction with an emphasis on aviation. Curriculum from the program formed the basis for the aeronautical engineering courses later taught at OSU. A scarce set of materials from an early instructional program of military aviation training and education one that would eventually become the US Air Force. np hardcover books
17147Chuck Yeager. Famous Aviator. Best known for being the first pilot to break the Sound Barrier. Typed letter signed by Yeager in which he writes about breaking the sound barrier. No date. 8 1/2 x 11 in. "Chuck Yeager" printed at top of page. "Many aviators believed that man was not meant to fly faster than the speed of sound they assumed the resulting drag rise may tear the aircraft apart. I was apprehensive about trying to break the sound barrier. But you don't let that apprehension affect your job. On October 14 1947 Glamorous Glenn with me in the cockpit was lifted to an altitude of 25000 feet by a World War II B-29 bomber and then they released my X-1 through the bomb bay. Once in the air I was rocketing to 40000 feet and exceeding 662 miles per hour which was the sound barrier at that altitude. As I always said you don't concentrate on risks. You concentrate on results." He also writes on his activity as a flying ace in WWII: "I flew 64 missions over Europe.and shot down 13 German planes. Wrapper edges worn chipped. Internally clean sound. <br/><br/>An original illustrated manual issued to WWII Naval flight cadets training at NAS Glenview dated July 1 1945 to the title page. Generously illustrated throughout with dozens of original drawings likely the work of a single unnamed illustrator and photograph reproductions executed and lettered in a decidedly Seuss-ian style heavily influenced by modern cartooning lending a simplistic treatment to gravely serious and technical material. A portion of the "Safety" chapter on p. 29 with the exaggerated likeness of a pilot resting upon a cloud holding a harp wearing angel wings and captioned: "Don't try to be the 'hottest' pilot but try to be the 'oldest.'" and "There are bold pilots and there are old piltos 'But!' - there are no old bold pilots." Six chapters are broken into dozens of sections with titles like: Your Parachute Safety Inherent Stability Turns Normal Spins Landings Steep Turns Precision Immelmans Progressive Spins etc. The impact of the allied air campaign and skill of American pilots during World War II is seldom mentioned in modesty. This is a rare flight training publication and exceptional example of illustrative instruction. A letter written by the renowned Russian ace and world record setting Sikorsky test pilot on behalf of Danish-born ballet and Broadway dancer Paul Haakon considered by many to be one of greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century. <br/><br/>Reading in part: "I have known Paul Haakon Longreen for over sixteen years. In the theatrical profession he is known under the name of Paul Haakon. It is very well known that he is one of the best dancers in the world. He gave up his dancing recently to become a flying instructor purely to serve his country. I sincerely believe that anything which could be done to facilitate his joining the United States Army Air Force reserve would benefit our war effort."<br/><br/>Despite Sergievsky's recommendation in our letter it seems Haakon never became a combat pilot during WWII and instead toured as an entertainer with the United Service Organizations. The DC-4/C-54 proved a popular and reliable type 1245 being built between May 1942 and August 1947 including 79 postwar DC-4s. As the brochure begins "In these pages Douglas presents its latest and finest commerical air transport the world-famous DC-4. . From nose to tail the DC-4 is modern efficient pacemaking. Sill this 2nd Lieutenant from Kansas worked on reconnaissance infantry contact puff target sketching railroad yards machine gun proficiency. He then transferred to the School of Aerial Gunnery at Selfride Field Michigan from 9/30/18 to 10/19/18. All courses are listed with hours spent grading signed by instructors. Laid-in are orders to report to Selfride Field and a letter dated October 19 1918 naming the log's owner as being now rated as an Aerial Observer. The 1938 winner was a woman named Jacqueline Cochrane who flew from Burbank California to Cleveland in 8 hours and 10 minutes. Program also includes a daily program of events. Black and white photo of Jacqueline Cochran in her plane. 9 x 7 in. Signed and inscribed by Cochran in blue ink. Speed record typed at bottom edge: "15KM Women's Speed Record 844.2 MPH". Cochran was a pioneer in women's aviation and one of the first woman pilots in the U.S. Air Force retiring at rank of colonel. She served as a transport pilot with the British and US Air Force during WWII and was one of the first women awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. In addition to her decorated military career Cochran was the first woman to break the sound barrier on May 18 1953 and to this day she holds more speed records than any other pilot in history. From Darwin the girls will proceed to Java Singapore China and the United States. After this historic flight Patterson went on to found the Pulitzler-Prize winning publication Newsday. Also of research significance two issues of "Behind the Lines The Journal of U. S. Military Special Operations" these very professional and meaty premier issue Nov-Dec '92 and subsequent number. Recipient lived in this period in Rocklin Ca.
