The author gives a fine preface to the work in which he notes that his is the first great English publication devoted to the panorama of aeronautics. Chapters included are devoted to a study of the development of aeronautics from ancient times to the present to the ascents made from 1800 until 1864 to the subject of balloons used during war time to aerostats to the physical experience of ballooning in calm and storm to a caricature of the science itself and to a survey and consideration of the future of aeronautics.<br> The work is superbly illustrated throughout including the chromolithograph and original photograph at the front and the 40 additional full-page plates produced on heavy stock. A very good solid copy of a book that for some time in the early twentieth century was an indispensable reference work. <br /> <br /> Grover Cleveland Loening was one of those pioneering entrepreneurs of aviation who seems to have started out strong and just ascended from there. He managed a factory for the Wright Brothers in Dayton became chief aeronautical engineer for the army published this work became vice president of the Sturtevant Aeroplane Co. founded his own company and occupied major roles in military and civilian aviation up to WW2 when he was a consultant for Grumman and an advisor for the N.A.C.A. 190919735<p><strong>Extremely rare document containing the rules for the kite contest organized to mark the inauguration of Port-Aviation on May 23 1909.</strong></p><p>The text dated May 13 1909 was written by Hugues Malenfer General Secretary of the Société d'Encouragement à l'Aviation which organized the contest.<br />It is indicated that this leaflet was distributed to subscribers of <em>L'Echo du Cerf-Volant</em> one of the first aeronautical magazines founded and directed by the young Georges Houard 1893-1964. This document comes from his papers.<br />Houard went on to become one of the great names in the aviation press publishing Les Ailes from 1921 to 1960.</p><p><strong>A touching document on the competition of little pioneers to inaugurate the world's first aerodrome at one of the very first international airshows.</strong><br />The kite contest was no mere anecdote either as the wind blew hard and the pilots were unable to fly as much as they would have liked.
