The great stimulus to the Section's activities was the launching of the first Soviet Earth satellite. Its members made both visual and radio observations of Sputnik 1 and Sputnik 2 which have been reported elsewhere. Since then in co-operation with the Radio Research Station Department of Scientific and Industrial Research an independent service has fed sixty visual observers with predictions in order to stimulate observations.'
