1937179478東京. Tokyo.: 東京日日新聞社. Tōkyō Nichinichi Shinbunsha. Showa 12 1937. Colour folding pictorial map which includes head and shoulders photographic portraits of leading political and military figures along left hand edge 55.6 x 79.5 cm. In good condition. Detailed coloured explanatory map of the "North China Incident" i.e. Marco Polo Bridge Incident of July 1937 which marked the start of the full-scale Japanese invasion of China including small inset photos of the leading Chinese political and military figures involved in or related to the incident.

The map was published in 1937 by the Nichi-Nichi Shinbun a leading Japanese newspaper. The main map shows Japan and its colonies Korea Taiwan and Karafuto and China extending as far as eastern Siberia in the north and Tibet and the northern parts of Burma and India in the southwest. It shows the main fronts where military action is taking place the location of airfields shipping routes and the territory held by various protagonists in the conflict. Despite its military theme the map is also decorated with small drawings of famous landmarks such as the Potala Palace and Taj Mahal and of animals such as camels tigers elephants and even in eastern Siberia a polar bear.

A smaller inset map gives a more detailed view of the area of Northern China where the main military actions are taking place while an inset section of Japanese text discusses Chinese military power and seems to emphasise the scale of the forces arrayed against Japan. The fifteen politicians and military figures depicted on the map include Chiang Kai-Shek Wang Ching-Wei under his birth name Wang Chao-Ming and Chin Teh-chun but not Mao Tse-Tung. . 東京日日新聞社.
