2024B2412084Arter Yayincilik 2024. New. n/a n/a The publication which also draws on the display of the installation as part of the group exhibition Precaution 03/06/202120/02/2022 curated by Emre Baykal at Arter features a comprehensive interpretive text written by Erdem Ceylan. In her installation Loss Tolon gives another chance to her works that were damaged during the San Francisco Bay Area earthquake of 1989 suffered from shipping accidents due to improper packaging or were affected by inadequate storage conditions which render them worthless in terms of their market and exhibition value. Adopting an experimental approach Ceylan explores Tolons work in the form of an Ancient Greek tragedy by damaging and transforming the set of literary conventions peculiar to this form through a postmodern technique. Proceeding with the dialogues of two characters Hephaistos and Daidalos who were locked in Arter overnight because the closing time of the exhibitions had passed but turned this state into an occasion to start a discussion on art and life the book provides a context that can convey the love-hate relationship between the artistic ego seeking permanence and immortality and the alter ego which is at peace with life. 2023B2307033Istanbul Modern 2023. New. n/a n/a In Another Place presents never-before-seen portraits by Nuri Bilge Ceylan one of the most authentic filmmakers of todays cinema. The exhibition brings together works that are unlike what the artist has created thus far: 22 portraits taken by Ceylan in Türkiye and geographies around the world as diverse as India Georgia China Morocco and Russia. Among the qualities that the portraits share are the relationships the characters establish with the built environment and natural landscapes carefully constructed photographic atmospheres the use of dramatic light the dialogue between different colors understated emotions and calm facial expressions. Ceylans portraits point to the depth of human experiences that bind us together while simultaneously bringing to mind that our lives cannot be separated from geography. The reference to another place in the exhibition title and series not only evokes the many countries to which Ceylan has traveled it also refers to the characters of his cinema who desire to be somewhere other than where they are. Revealing the daily struggles loneliness boredom and melancholy of people around the world through his subjects who gaze directly at the photographer and therefore also at us Ceylan focuses on the common emotions across geographies rather than the differences. The unique formal language in all of Ceylans photographs activate our imagination and make us feel connected to people and geographies that we have never been to or experienced.
