1518179430London.: The Graphic. March 151890. Engraving 15.1 x 22.6 cm plus caption on a trimmed newspaper leaf slightly toned the images in very good condition. Engraving redolent of colonial Hong Kong from a sketch by an engineer of the China Squadron Charles E. Eldred the Hong Kong Almanack for 1891 lists him as being aboard the British vessel Victor Emmanuel. The Hong Kong Polo Club also had strong military ties as the original commentary attests below the Secretary of the Club was a Staff Major Fletcher of the Royal Artillery. <br> <br>"This meeting took place on November 28th having been post poned on account of bad weather. The Chinese coolies were much interested in the bagpipes of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders probably because to their ears the sound bears a very close resemblance to that produced by a common Chinese instrument something like a flageolet. Within the enclosure almost the only people not English were the Chinese chair-coolies and the mah-Joos grooms. The chair-coolies cluster outside the Grand Stand the balcony of which is occupied chiefly by ladies. The professional coolies were naturally highly interested in the Chair Races which were the most amusing events in the programme. In the Fai-Tee Stakes the gentlemen amateurs appeared in regular coolie-costume. One of the riders borrowed his bagpipes from one of the Highland pipers; but they proved his destruction for when his team came to grief just outside the winning-post he sat on the ground playing his pipes and deafening himself to the shouts of the judges who were endeavouring to inform him that he had not passed the winning-post. In our picture the pipers have been accidently omitted.-Our engraving is from a sketch by Mr. Charles E. Eldred H.M.S. Cordelia Hong Kong." Engravings prepared for "The Illustrated London News" on the announcement of the British Governor Sir John Bowring 1729-1872 and published two months before his arrival in April 1854. Overall size: 90 cm x 150 cm.<br /> A rare large-scale view of Hong Kong Island painted in the first ten years of colonial rule. The charming scene shows both Chinese Junks and European tripple-masted sailing ships at anchor in Victoria harbour with the rippling hills of Hong Kong Island above the burgeoning town of Victoria.<br /><br />Many watercolours painted for western export emphasised the trading nature of Hong Kong hence the emphasis on merchant vessels and company buildings on the waterline including those of Dent & Co. and Lindsay. The absence of St John's Cathedral amongst the urban waterline dates this painting before 1849 only eight years after land grants were first issued to British investors following the cession of Hong Kong to Britain at the Treaty of Nanking. The image is also reminiscent of the 1843 seal of Hong Kong which shows merchant ships on a quay with the mountains of Hong Kong in the background and strengthens the idea that this painting represents the quintessential depiction of Hong Kong.<br /> [c.1849]. unknown

1534American President Lines. First Edition. Near Fine. Travel poster printed in full color recto only. Measures 23.25 inches x 34.5 inches 59cm x 87cm. Near Fine condition with slight waviness along left edge that would be readily flattened under glass. No tearing no creases but two slight abrasions verso as if tape had been hastily removed not affecting image. Very slight fading to color along the "LSON" of Wilson but only slightly perceptible and that might be a production flaw or design effect as to show variation in the polished brass look of nameplate lettering. The other copy we've seen had a similar condition. Not a reproduction. Original early-60s travel poster promoting travel to Hong Kong one of the Asia ports called at by the S.S. President Wilson a passenger cruise ship of the American President Lines. The American President Lines APL was founded with the US government's acquisition of the faltering Dollar Shipping Line. APL implemented round-the-world passenger service enhancing its fleet in 1946 with the SS President Cleveland and SS President Wilson. The ships were promoted as "your American hotel abroad."<p>Vintage photograph of the SS President Wilson sailing past a sea-going Chinese junk juxtaposes the luxury of modern passenger liner travel with the age-old traditional Chinese sailing craft. Original paper not linen-backed. Ephemera included with the poster includes a passenger manifest for a January 1958 sailing of the SS WIlson from San Francisco to Honolulu Yokohama Manila Hong Kong Kobe and return as well as two menus from the SS President Cleveland August 1959. The panorama shows at the top far left printed in red ink: "PANORAMA OF CANTON" followed by "RAILWAY TO FATSHAN" "SHEK-WAI-TONG" "PUN-TONG" " WHITE CLOUD HILL" "FRENCH CATHEDRAL" "SHAMEEN" "RIVER STEAMBOAT WHARF" "FERRY PIERS" "CHAU-TAU-TSUI" "HONAM AND FONG CHUEN." THE COMPLETE RARE SET OF FOUR COLOR POSTCARDS OF CANTON: This is seldom found complete with all four cards connected. Our RARE example is complete as issued. A lovely view of Canton city with two rivers meandering through the city. . This panorama covers the whole city and the rivers with several kinds of shipping. CONDITION: The four attached postcards are in excellent condition with bright color and no fading. There is some of the usual wear in the folds where a small bit of the color is lacking. The most famous visitor's site in Hong Kong from 1935 was the celebrated "TIGER BALM GARDEN" also known as the "AW BOON HAW MANSION." It was a three-dimensional sculpture garden showing various Buddhist aspects of life death happiness sadness joy evil and justice. Typical concepts in Chinese Buddhism and Confucianism. THE HISTORY: In 1935 the landscaped garden was built at a cost of HK$16 million. It was one of the most favorite and popular sites in Hong Kong for seventy years. The Garden was demolished for redevelopment in 2004 thus for ever TIGER BALM GARDEN vanished for ever. SUBJECT OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS: This miniature photograph collection shows some twenty hand-colored original photographs of the Garden its lovely pavilion and scenes of Buddhas eight beautiful & very naked women view of the Kwai Fei taking a bath also more nude ladies ! Kan Chin Pavilion two pagodas lakes Buddhist monuments Buddhist heaven & hell panoramic view of the gardens & mansion half-nude mermaid Fat Buddha skinny Ancestral Buddha "Tiger-Balm Tiger" and many others ! . Each photograph has a Chinese and English caption at the bottom margin. Each photograph is 8.4 x 6.4 cm. including the margin. The photo image is 8.1 x 6 cm. PHOTO CONDITION: Each miniature black & white photo was hand-painted and tinted. Each photo is lightly layed down on the black card.
