The first recipe is attributed to the sadly unidentifiable wife of Eduardo Rosal who was appointed the first Filipino consul general in the colony in 1958. The YWCA branch was founded in 1920. 1961176992Hong Kong: Chinese Importers' & Exporters' Association 1961. The 1961 edition of this long-running handbook offering a snapshot of the colony's commercial life and major businesses. In the 1950s following the UN trade embargo on China Hong Kong shifted towards export-led growth in particular the manufacture of textiles and plastic goods. Between 1951 and 1961 exports as a percentage of GDP grew from 30 to 80 percent. Octavo. Tables and advertisements a few colour throughout; section titles printed on green paper; text in Chinese. Original grey cloth spine decoratively stamped in blind and lettered in Chinese in gilt front cover lettered in Chinese and English in gilt advertisement endpapers. 1971 Hong Kong ownership inscription on title page. Spine worn in places with couple of marks at head signs of handling contents lightly toned: a very good copy. hardcover

This pamphlet was produced in the midst of a trade embargo with the People's Republic of China and advises the reader on when and how to use a Certificate of Origin what goods are prohibited and a list of trustworthy vendors for various goods in Hong Kong. Small quarto 130 x 93 mm. Wire-stitched in original blue wrappers covers lettered in white. A little rubbed rear panel and last few leaves creased. A very good example. unknown

Readers are warned of street guides who prey on unsuspecting tourists. "These fellows are for the most part members of gangs who lead you to places where you may be cheated." Octavo leaflet 194 x 134 mm unfolding to 388 x 535 mm with maps of Hong Kong and Kowloon and Hong Kong region west to Lantao inset map of Central. Verso with general information and shopping guide. The booklet gives the best retail and tourist pit-stops information on hotels and exchange rates and a bilingual list of handy phrases. Sailors are warned to buy selectively: "U.S. Treasury Department regulations prohibit the importation into the United States of any merchandise originating in Communist China or North Korea" p. 24. 1967158680Hong Kong: Ta Kung Pao 1967. Hongkong has been turned into a hell for its Chinese inhabitants First edition first printing scarce in this condition of this charged and sometimes graphic bilingual photobook published by the pro-Beijing newspaper Ta Kung Pao in the wake of the Hong Kong riots and the burning of the British mission in Beijing in August 1967. Despite all the bluster privately Mao and other communist leaders were extremely keen to see the territory an important trading partner remain in British hands. Following the explosive beginning of the Cultural Revolution in China left-wing propagandists in Hong Kong infiltrated labour disputes and protests over conditions to fan the flames of anti-British sentiment. The present work presents dozens of photographs to show how patriotic residents have "armed themselves with the great thought of Mao Tse-tung" in a struggle against "anti-national oppression" foreword. A final section boasts of the global support for these actions including from London's very own Finsbury Communist Association. The present work was issued in two variants of the wrappers with no discernible priority. The front cover of the other design is lettered "The Upheaval in Hong Kong" in white against the same red-drab colour scheme. Short quarto. Photographic half-tones throughout several pages with quotations from Mao printed in red sepia vignette on first leaf. Text in Chinese and English. Original card wrappers titles to spine in red and black front cover lettered in white and black against red and drab horizontal bands. Wrappers well-preserved moderate creasing and marking loss at head of spine only slightly affecting Chinese title text block square and holding firm clean internally with light bumping to lower corner of text block. Overall size: 90 cm x 150 cm.<br /> A rare large-scale view of Hong Kong Island painted in the first ten years of colonial rule. The charming scene shows both Chinese Junks and European tripple-masted sailing ships at anchor in Victoria harbour with the rippling hills of Hong Kong Island above the burgeoning town of Victoria.<br /><br />Many watercolours painted for western export emphasised the trading nature of Hong Kong hence the emphasis on merchant vessels and company buildings on the waterline including those of Dent & Co. and Lindsay. The absence of St John's Cathedral amongst the urban waterline dates this painting before 1849 only eight years after land grants were first issued to British investors following the cession of Hong Kong to Britain at the Treaty of Nanking. The image is also reminiscent of the 1843 seal of Hong Kong which shows merchant ships on a quay with the mountains of Hong Kong in the background and strengthens the idea that this painting represents the quintessential depiction of Hong Kong.<br /> [c.1849]. unknown

Throughout each booklet particular emphasis is placed on the affordability of travel in Hong Kong and much effort is made to portray the colony as a romantic idyll. . 190151358Hong Kong 1901. Three quarto manuscript letters totaling 22 pages and approx. 6000 words on life in Hong Kong as an American expat. Clean and legible. The author "Katheryn" writes to her friend Jesse in Oregon describing her daily routine and life in Hong Kong with her husband Tom who works there. "Hong Kong is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. I cannot describe it to you but will send you some Kodak pictures." Her writing is rather slangy and telegraphic but she manages to convey a sense of her life and times. "We have a rickshaw of our own now Tom bought it last week. It is a nice one made in Japan and better than the ones they make here. Have two coolies so they can drag Tom up the hill. One runs behind and pushes. A tailor is making their uniforms. I chose kahki sic trimmed with red for them Will also have the monogram TWH in red letters on them. People here think you are somebody if your coolies are in uniform." She goes on at length in this manner explaining that the chair coolies necessary to negotiate the many steps in Hong Kong do not like Tom because he weighs 200 pounds. She on the other hand goes where she pleases. She discusses her wardrobe all white clothing and talks about clothing and Chinese tailors and about friends of her husband's - other expats. She describes their rooms a bargain at $160 per month. Then "Although the Plague is usually worse here in summer it seems now that there are fewer cases than there were a few weeks ago. I go through the Plague district that is where it is the worst Wauchai a suburb nearly every day." She also talks about ships currently in the harbor "trouble in the north" and the Hong Kong regiment. We gather that she's been married just a year and that her husband pampers her but that she misses her friend Jessie and is a little homesick. The first twelve-page letter was written between June 19 and 25. The second a two-pager sending condolences for a death in Jessie's family was written August 27 1900. The third letter eight pages was written in 1901. In it Kathryn talks about cameras and mentions their trip to Canton and Macao. unknown
