Engraving published during the months prior to the attack on and four year occupation of Canton Guangzhou by allied British and French troops during the time of the Second Opium War. Fine engraving prepared for "The Illustrated London News". <br> <br>The commentary relates the attack of a British engineer the inspector of lighthouses. The recently completed lighthouse unfortunately not shown provoked resentment in the local population as the workers has been brought from Ningbo. The commentary also mentions the recent murder of the British diplomat Augustus Raymond Margary and his staff in February 1875 whilst scoping potential overland trade routes between British India and China's provinces provoked a diplomatic crisis with China. <br> <br>From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker. . Disbound report from the Annual Report for the Smithsonian Institution: pp 265-277 8 black and white photographic plates 22.5 x 14.7 cms front leaf loose age-toning and inner edge a trifle marked but otherwise in very good condition. Sir Francis Younghusband 1863-1942 returned to a hero's welcome following his Tibet "Expedition" of 1903-4 which was in reality a militarized diplomatic mission driven by geopolitical anxiety the Great Game and was marked by dramatic clashes and some 2700 Tibetan casualties. This report was originally read at the Royal Geographical Society in London in February 1905 here reprinted from a Smithsonian Annual Report of the same year and was widely reviewed. One such appearing in "Nature" belied the military truths: <br>"Younghusband was also able to touch briefly upon some of the results obtained by the scientific experts who accompanied the mission as well as by the survey party under Captains Rawling and Ryder which in the late autumn did excellent work along the whole course of the Upper Brahmaputra proving definitely that no peaks higher than Everest exist on this flank of the Himalayas." .
