'Uighur Stories from Along the Silk Road is a collection of folktales legends and myths collected in English for the first time. The Uighur people who lived along the northern rim of the Tarim Basin encountered foreigners from Europe Arabia Persia India China Mongolia and Japan who traveled through their land along the Silk Road the major trading route between Europe and China. This interaction began a rich multicultural heritage that gave birth to these tales and continued to flourish once the sea replaced the land route for trade. The stories encapsulate Uighur history in the words of the people who migrated from the Northern Mongolian Plateau to Central Asia. They reveal the effects of the gradual conversion to Islam as well as those of earlier beliefs involving Buddhism Nestorian Christianity and Manichaeism on the personality of the people.'. 1914216748London.: Methuen & Co Ltd. 1st Edition. 1914. 404pp 31 3 publisher's catalogues. original paper wrappers chipped with tape repairs on spine corners bumped. Good copy. At first glance this novel may appear unremarkable however it is of considerable interest in the 20th century history of Chinese-European relations as it includes on page 26 what is believed to be the earliest published reference to the infamous sign in Shanghai's Public Garden which purportedly stated "Dogs and Chinese not Admitted". The sign has now been conclusively shown not to have stated this however references to the racist wording still appear to this day and the reporting of its existence has caused and continues to cause a great deal of ill feeling.

Reginald Johnston former tutor to Pu Yi the last emperor of China wrote in a 1927 pamphlet issued by the Tianjin British Committee of Information that the anti-Chinese wording "it is a kind of slander which takes a lot of killing and survives even the most authoritative denials". Shanghai's Dogs and Chinese Not Admitted" Sign: Legend History and Contemporary Symbol - Robert A. Bickers and Jeffrey N. Wasserstrom. The China Quarterly No 142. June 1995.

Putnam Weale was the name under which Bertram Lenox Simpson 1877- 1930 wrote many books about China. Born in England Bertam Simpson followed his father into the Chinese Maritime Customs Service leaving the service in 1901. He wrote a great deal about China in the years that followed and became deeply involved in Chinese politics. He was murdered in 1930 and it seems quite likely that his murder was of a political nature though neither motive nor killer was ever found. . Methuen & Co Ltd. unknown

The author states in the prologue that the people living in these pages are not real but they are essential parts of a picture painted to portray facts - that is the impact of the East upon the West the disarray which collisions bring and the ensuing irony.
