Conjoined triptych of ink and watercolour woodblock prints trimmed to the margins together 35 x 63.3 cms backed onto Japanese scrap paper with some writing title and descriptive cartouches top right red censor's stamp lower left and artist's signature lower right some paper abrasions wear at the joins slight bleeding of ink and offsetting on the verso but overall in good condition. Vivid depiction of the Battle of Seonghwan also known as the battle of Asan in Korea July 29 1894 the first major land battle on of the Sino-Japanese War 1894-1895. Chinese troops are seen fleeing the charging Japanese marines and the silhouettes of airborn casualties are depicted in the bright orange explosion. <br> <br>Yōsai Nobukazu 1872-1944 was active towards the very end of the ukiyo-e period when the popular days of this style were over. Printmakers like Yōsai struggled and he survived as an artist by depicting the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars. Yōshū Chikanobu was his teacher active 1838-1912 and Yōsai Nobukazu was considered his best student. The majority of his prints were triptychs of battles of the Sino-Japanese war. Colour woodblock print 37.2 x 25.3 cms the sheet a little age-toned a spot of browning at the foot and a pinhole in the upper margin but the image unaffected very good condition. This colour woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora is an excellent example of Yokohama-e Yokohama Prints which were very popular in Japan after the country was opened in the mid-19th century. Yokohama was one of the trading ports with the outside world and many foreigners were residing in the area. The Yokohama-e was very similar to the Nagasaki-e Nagasaki Prints and depicted people and cultures which were foreign to the Japanese. Utagawa Yoshitora was active between the end of Edo Period to the mid-Meiji Period and produced numerous Nishiki-e prints including Yokohama-e in his career. He was regarded as one of the top Nishiki-e artists around that time. <br> <br>In this print a Western man is strolling outside with his dog and a Mongolian boy who carries an umbrella for him. The man is observing something in the distance and about to jot down something in his notebook with a pen which he holds in his right hand. An albumen photograph of an ancient Canton Guangzhou landmark known as the Five Storey pagoda once part of the city wall which still stands today in the city's largest park Yue Xiu Park. The pagoda also known as Zhenhai Tower was built in 1380 by Zhu Liangzu during the Ming Dynasty 1368-1644 and stands on the Yuexiu Hill. It is 92 feet high and has been destroyed and rebuilt five times. The building now houses the City Museum which exhibits the history of Canton from Neolithic times. 5 1/2 x 4". Printed on lightweight paper very small mark upper right not on the image. unknown
1895188172Shanghai: Jiangnan zhizao ju "Jiangnan Arsenal" 1895. Turning China into an economic powerhouse First edition issued by Shanghai's Jiangnan Arsenal as part of the late-Qing "self-strengthening movement" during which a wave of radical commercial scientific and legal changes aimed to rapidly modernize China's economy. The text was overseen by John Fryer 1839-1928 who translated more Western scientific works into Chinese than any other 19th-century sinologist. In 1868 Fryer was recruited by the Jiangnan Arsenal a hotbed of political and military reform to join its dedicated Translation Office. Over the next three decades he produced dozens perhaps even hundreds of publications for the use of trainee officers and scientists. For the present work Fryer co-operated with the Westernized engineer Zhong Tianwei 1840-1900 and drew inspiration from provisions introduced in successive British parliamentary Acts regulating merchant shipping. Sections discuss systems of signal lights how ships can safely pass alongside each other and best practices for pilots and navigators. Quarto 295 x 175 mm ff. 1 38 25. China on Thomas Hardy's doorstep Labels on both faces indicate that this artefact of missionary printing was owned by Henry Joseph Moule 1825-1904 a close friend of Thomas Hardy and the brother of two prominent China missionaries. Moule was the first curator of the Dorset County Museum where this woodblock was perhaps displayed to a curious public. Moule's seven brothers included George Evans Moule 1828-1912 consecrated the first Bishop of Mid-China in 1880 and Arthur Evans Moule 1838-1916 who was active in Ningbo and Shanghai and who also wrote prolifically on Chinese history and current affairs. The primary face has the text of the fourth to tenth commandments as given in Deuteronomy and the carving employs a songti character style with serifs. The largest of the labels reads "Block from which a page of a book has been printed; viz. part of the Ten Commandments. Printing is a much older art in China than in Europe but always was and is performed as by the pre-Gutenberg European printers viz. from wood-cut blocks. A rough block with wood-engraving tools accompanies this block; and also an inking brush and a printing pad. The press is used China." Moule is named on a small label on the reverse. Single wooden block 165 x 210 mm engraved in 8-columns on primary face one column of characters and page subdivisions on secondary face 3 manuscript labels the largest covering upper-left quadrant of primary face. Lindley 1840 -1873 British officer writer and adventurer who fought for the Taiping insurgents in their rebellion against the Manchu dynasty one of the largest and bloodiest civil wars in history. The Taiping Rebellion 1850-64 was instigated by Hong Xiuquan and his followers whose goal was to create a "Heavenly Kingdom" in China with Christianity as the official religion. Lindley was a Royal Navy officer stationed in Hong Kong who resigned his commission in 1860 to work for a Taiping general as an artillery instructor. He also became a spokesperson for the cause courting Western support and procuring weapons and supplies. His wife Maria the daughter of the Portuguese consul at Macau served in the rebellion as a sniper and was killed in an ambush. Lindley remained in China until the fall of the Heavenly Kingdom in 1864. Two years later he wrote this work the only detailed account written of the Taiping Rebellion from the rebels' perspective.<br /> <br /> Two volumes royal 8vo: Vol I xvii iii 424pp; Vol II: vii i 425-842 complete. Much better than it sounds this is a very pleasing copy of a scarce item. "The author states that ' the story - though not all fact is not fiction. Its incidents are either real occurrences or like them. The official corruption presented may be less in other localities; yet it is to be feared that it is general and great. The customs described may differ in other parts of China; the author has presented what he knew prevailed in the vicinity of Amoy his home for a time. <br> <br>The facts regarding the famine were gathered from published reports of missionaries and from statements made by missionaries to the author. At least one of those stated that sixty-three per cent of government appropriations were taken for their own use by mandarins instead of being applied for the relief of suffering. <br> <br>The Tai Ping Rebellion is of course a matter of history: but the facts relating to the capture of Amoy were obtained from him whose name Rev. Four engravings prepared for "The Graphic" illlustrated newspaper by the noted engraver and photographer Horace Harral 1817-1905. Prominent in the mosaic layout is the portrait of Li Hongzhang then Viceroy of Zhili. The murder of the British diplomat Augustus Raymond Margary and his staff in February 1875 whilst scoping potential overland trade routes between British India and China's provinces provoked a diplomatic crisis with China. It handed the British authorities an excuse to put pressure on the Qing government and hastened the build up of Chinese troops and armaments. War was averted with the negotiaton of the Yantai Treaty Chefoo Convention signed by Li and British diplomat Sir Thomas Wade. <br> <br>The four captioned engravings: <br> <br>1.
