Prima edizione First Edition. <em>Nel 1946 furono costruiti la<strong> fabbrica di lavorazione del tabacco di Cheongju e i magazzini Dongbu Changko</strong>. Le dimensioni di questa fabbrica e dei magazzini erano ENORMI. Impiegava oltre 3.000 residenti locali che venivano pagati per il loro lavoro e a cui era permesso parlare e scrivere nella loro lingua madre. Era un'azienda coreana e i cittadini di Cheongju erano orgogliosi dei risultati raggiunti. Un risultato incredibile considerando che erano passati 35 anni di colonialismo paralizzante. Nel 1999 la fabbrica stava diventando inattiva e si pensava a come reinventare lo spazio. Ma nel 2004 il cantiere chiuse definitivamente e rimase inattivo. Nel 2012 sono stati concepiti piani per rivitalizzare l'intero sito come spazio culturale. In Corea solitamente un luogo come questo viene demolito e viene costruito un nuovo complesso. Si tratta quindi di un<strong> </strong>passo epico per la<strong> pianificazione urbana</strong> che mantiene la storia e l'orgoglio locale. The most numerous group of Indian migrants were plantation workers of whom much has been written. Less well known were the Chulia Tamil Muslims who played a vital role in the city's commercial growth. Khoo Salma devotes this extensively researched book to exploring their role in Penang until independence emphasising particularly the supportive and cohesive functions of the community based around the main Chulia mosque on the island. 529 pages including many illustrations a bibliography and an index.
