The derbent organization which was established in order to protect caravans and trade-roads and developed from the 'Tutkavul' system in Ilhanlis, is one of the important roads of settlement in the Ottoman State. The derbent facilities, surrounded by walls, are built around intersections of the main roads and in places with central importance; therefore, the inhabitants live in village recorded as the ones responsible for various services are exempted from some or all taxes. Derbents are not only important facilities they also provide security for the region and trade-route but they played a role in enabling settlement in isolated places to Although they were significant in terms of their functions, their organization begins to get out of order in 17th century, the residents have to leave their houses since they are subjected to pressure of bandits. In 18th century the state tried to put this malfunction in order. In spite of all the measures taken the derbents. In couldn't be brought back to its old form and so neglected. The reform movements that began with the administrative reforms "Tanzimat" enable derbent organizations to be removed and in modern sense security organization is founded; in this framework inns and derbents in some certain points are transformed into gendarme post.

The second of the mini graduate symposium series organized by the Graduate Program in Settlement Archaeology of the Middle East Technical University was held on April 27th, 2007 at the Middle East Technical University. Studies on the archaeology, history, art history and geography of the Marmara Region were presented at this symposium which also provided a great opportunity to publish the second of the Settlement Archaeology Series. The symposium was not only incredibly diverse in terms of subject matter, but also the papers extended over a very long period of time. The Graduate Program in Settlement Archaeology will continue organizing and publishing these symposia bilingually in order to continue and increase exchange of ideas and data among young scholars in a dynamic atmosphere and hopefully encourage more graduate symposia in Turkey. New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 22 cm). In English, German, and Turkish. 367 p. Color ills. Tatarli: The return of colours.= Tatarli: Rückkehr der Farben.= Tatarli: Renklerin dönüsü. Das im 5. Jh. v. September 2010 ausgestellt. ARCHEOLOGY Anatolian civilizations Phrygia Excavations History of art.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 176 p. Color and b/w ills. "The ancient city of Elaiussa Sebaste (today Ayas) lies on the south-eastern coast of Turkey. The birth and the development of the settlement were granted by the favourable geographical position of the city, situated along the important coastal road connecting Asia Minor to Syria and projected in the intense commercial traffic of the eastern Mediterranean and, secondly, to the abundant natural resources of the hinterland - timber from the Tauro forests, vineyards and olive trees (elaion) to which the name Elaiussa itself alludes. The site was, during the Roman age, one of the most important cities of the Roman province of Cilicia, which developed considerably in the 2nd and 3rd century AD; it maintained its prestigious role as significant trading port until the Late Empire and the first Byzantine age. Thanks to its long and continuous life, Elaiussa can be indeed qualified as a remarkable case study for the deepening of historical and archaeological knowledge on the dynamics of the development and evolution of urban centres in the Eastern Mediterranean area. Prof. Dr. Eugenia Equini Schneider (Università di Roma "Sapienza", Italy) has been the head of the excavation team in Elaiussa Sebaste since 1995".
