"Amasya has traces in Dogantepe Höyük that go as far back as to the latter period of the Late Neolithic Age and, as Sevket Dönmez notes in his article, "Amasya is one of the rare Anatolian cities to have kept its name (Amasea, Amaseia, Amasseia, Amaseia Hadriane, Amaseia Severiane Antoniane, Amaseia Severeia Alexandreia) almost intact from time immemorial. Amasya is on the Yesilirmak River that in Hittite texts is named 'Kummeshmaha' and in the classical era was called 'Iris'. The Yesilirmak flows from west to east along the long narrow channel it carves in the limestone and travertine rocks. Towering immediately north of the river is Mount Harsena where the city's castle is built." It is a common belief that the love of Ferhat and Sirin found a home in Amasya. In his article Sevket Dönmez remarks that, "the Anatolian version of the epic love story of Princess Sirin and Ferhad - Sirin being the sister of Queen Mahmene Banu, Azerbaijan's ruler of the city of Erzen; Ferhad being the region's famous craftsman- is set in Amasya where it has left a mark on the town's historical topography and archaeology. The two simple graves side by side on Mount Ferhad today have been attributed to Ferhad and Sirin, illustrating how contemporary and popular the story is." Amasya, Maid of the Mountains, is about the cultural heritage of a city that has been the cradle rich in popular culture and belief systems. Sevket Dönmez looks at the city as an antique settlement and portrays Pontic Cappadocia in his article about Oluz Höyük. E. Emine Naza Dönmez emphasizes the importance of Harsena Castle and Kizlar Sarayi for the city and she also focuses on the architecture in the Turkish Period. Muzaffer Doganbas describes the woodcraft in the region, and also the belief systems and sacred buildings. I. Hakki Göztas scrutinizes the historical development of the city and its secular architecture. The photographers Ali Konyali and Tarkan Kutlu held a mirror to the city of Amasya in this monograph prepared by Filiz Özdem.

Fine English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. 32 p., numerous b/w plts. Amorium: A brief guide to a late Roman and Byzantine city in Central Anatolia.= Orta Anadolu'da bulunan bir geç Roma ve Bizans kenti Amorium. Amorium was a city in Phrygia, Asia Minor which was founded in the Hellenistic period, flourished under the Byzantine Empire, and declined after the Arab sack of 838. It was situated on the Byzantine military road from Constantinople to Cilicia. Its ruins and höyük ('mound, tumulus') are located under and around the modern village of Hisarköy, 13 kilometers east of the district center, Emirdag, Afyonkarahisar Province, Turkey. Amorium is the Latinized version of its original Greek name Amorion. Arab / Islamic sources refer to the city as Ammuriye. Under Ottoman rule the site, which never regained importance, was called Hergen Kale.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 180 p. Color and b/w ills. "In 1836 William Hamilton identified the site of Amorium and provided the first description of the ancient ruins. "We reached the deserted and dreary site of what was once a populous city.Near the centre of the valley in which the ruins are situated. is an insulated hill about half a mile in circumference, on which may still be traced a portion of the walls of an Acropolis. The principal part of the town is to the S. and S.W. of the Acropolis. These ruins.appear chiefly to date from the early Byzantine or Christian period., marking the existence of one of those large and important towns which were destroyed in this part of Asia Minor by the irruptions of the Saracens and the Seljukian monarchs of Iconium." Much of what Hamilton described has now disappeared, but since 1988 the Amorium Excavations Project has been able to reveal other ruins that testify to the accuracy of his assessment of Amorium as an important Roman and Byzantine city. This guidebook aims to give an interim account of the on-going excavations and set the site in its proper historical context.".

I was fascinated when I first saw the Catalhoyuk map, a heritage of 'Anatolian Civilizations' which has survived 8,200 years of history, while at the same time I was greatly disappointed that such a unique map was neither known sufficiently enough nor introduced to the cartographic scholars. It was for this reason that about two years ago, I decided to conduct research into the matter. However, as I was already involved in two research projects entitled 'The History of Turkish Mapping in the Republican Era' and 'Historical Relief Maps, ' respectively, it was not possible to find time for the Catalhoyuk map. Once I had completed these studies, I started to carry out my study on 'Piri Reis Kitab-i Bahriye' (Piri Reis and His Book of the Sea) , which has been continiuing for a few years, Thus, my study of the Catalhoyuk map had been delayed once again. When I saw the map once again, in early 1999, I decided that I could not wait any longer. Even though my continuing research would be delayed, I could not avoid giving priority to the study of the Catalhoyuk map. New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 211 p., color ills. An epigraphic guide to Hierapolis of Phrygia (Pamukkale). The epigraphic guide to Hierapolis of Phrygia (Pamukkale) aims to present visitors to the site and the museum with some of the most interesting Greek inscriptions that they will encounter, helping to both read and understand them. The excavations conducted by the Italian Archaeological Mission have trebled the number of documents that were known at the end of the nineteenth century, now totalling over 1000. Starting in Hellenistic times, the inscriptions from Hierapolis shed light on all aspects of urban life, and provide information on the composition of the population, on institutions and government, on municipal and provincial roles, as well as on religion, productive sectors and the organisation of gilds, Greek-type contests and amphitheatre games, the activity of public benefactors, funerary rites, the Jewish community and the expressions of Christianity. The majority of the most significant documents have been published, and work is now directed towards producing a scientific corpus of all epigraphic material.
