Laos. Il paese del milione di elefanti e dell'ombrello bianco

br. Tra i paesi del Sudest asiatico ricchi di storia e di fascino, il Laos è stato, forse, quello meno conosciuto. I testi qui raccolti intendono presentare il Paese così come apparve agli occhi di alcuni europei che lo visitarono alla fine dell'800. Ad aprire la strada fu Henri Mouhot, naturalista che con il sostegno della Royal Geographical Society esplorò il Laos trovandovi la morte nel 1861, trent'anni prima della colonizzazione francese. Le vivide pagine del suo diario produssero un impatto enorme sui lettori e sulla comunità scientifica europea del tempo. Isabelle Massieu, sul finire del XIX secolo, fu probabilmente la prima donna occidentale a inoltrarsi in quei territori. Il resoconto del suo viaggio dall'Alto Laos fino a Hué, in Vietnam, costituisce una ricca e dettagliata testimonianza sui costumi delle popolazioni locali e su come l'amministrazione coloniale francese gestiva i territori del protettorato. Le lettere dell'ufficiale Joseph Chevalier ci trasportano poi nell'atmosfera che si viveva Luang Prabang a inizio Novecento. Completano la raccolta il mito della fondazione del Laos e una presentazione del capolavoro della letteratura laotiana, il poema di ispirazione buddista Sang Sinxay, risalente al XVII secolo.
