Un gran numero di disperati vietnamiti - si dice un milione -s’imbarcarono verso l’Indonesia, l’Australia e la Tailandia e un numero sconosciuto di loro perirono, annegati, assaltati da pirati e divorati dagli squali. Il fiume di rifugiati vietnamiti diretti a Hong Kong divenne ingestibile dopo il 1979 con la ‘pulizia etnica’ effettuata dai Vietcong nei confronti di vietnamiti con radici cinesi o con coloro che venivano ritenuti compromessi con il regime filo-americano di Saigon ... fra l’indifferenza della intellighenzia mondiale... La Thatcher dichiarò Hong Kong ‘porto di primo asilo’ ma la buona intenzione provocò un enorme flusso di rifugiati: prima perseguitati politici e poi economici, noti come i ‘boat people.’ Sbarcati venivano rinchiusi in grandi campi di raccolta nei quali alcuni restarono per vent’anni, rifiutando di essere rimpatriiati (wiki).
