TILLIER LOUIS era una marinaio mentre BONNETAIN PAUL fu un celebre giornalista, scrittore e giornalita francese che si conobbero a bordo del celebre transatlantico "Portugal" e decidino di scrivre un resoconto del loro viaggio e della storia della nave sulla quale viaggiarono. L'opera li porta a tratteggiare la struttura della nave (presente anche una bella planimetria a piena pagina), a ricostruire la vita a bordo e a descrivre diversi luoghi esotici e non come Algeri, Malacca, Suez, Saigon, Marsiglia ecc.
