Commercianti, esploratori e monaci indiani viaggiarono verso oriente a partire dall'attuale Sri Lanka e dalla Birmania raggiungendo la Tailandia, la Cambogia, Giava, la Malesia, fino al delta del Mekong. Non si trattò mai di un'invasione armata, ma di una pacifica presenza ed influenza che la cultura indiana seppe affermare in tutti questi territori. Sia la religione Induista sia quella Buddista si diffusero così dal subcontinente indiano al resto dell'Asia meridionale. Queste nuove religioni portarono le loro iconografie e i loro stili che si innestavano sulle culture locali fecondandole e trasformandole ma mai cancellandole.
