"Portland staged its first and only world's fair from June 1 through October 15 1905. During those four and a half months 1588000 paying visitors passed through the gates to the 400-acre fairgrounds on the northwest edge of town…The Lewis and Clark Exposition was conceived so Portland could demonstrate that it could mount a major civic enterprise. The city had had a solid record of economic growth since its founding in 1845 but at the turn of the twentieth century it was competing for investment and immigration with dozens of other cities throughout the American West" Carl Abbott on the Oregon Encyclopedia website. 1876895260551
Excellent condition but missing the original map that was originally included. 11 fine chromolithographic and 11 lithographic plates. Publication of this report was originally intended for 1861 but the Civil War intervened and prevented publication for another fifteen years. The expedition under Macomb went west from Santa Fe across northern New Mexico and Arizona to the Colorado. The whole drainage of the San Juan had been traced and the relationship of that river with the Colorado clearly established. More important they had also established that the Green River united with the Grand to form the Colorado. The entire maze of intricate canyon country had been threaded and its geography revealed for the first time. In addition Newberry was able to establish numerous stratigraphic columns and to trace the Triassic Jurassic and Carboniferous strata far out across the Colorado River. Newberry.introduced a new level of sophistication into the study of western geology.
Government printing office hardcover

ABOUT THIS BOOK: In 1498 a young captain sailed from Portugal circumnavigated Africa crossed the Indian Ocean and discovered the sea route to the Indies opening up access to the fabled wealth of the East. It was the longest voyage known to history; the ships were pushed to their limits their crews were racked by storms and devastated by disease. However the greatest enemy was neither nature nor the fear of venturing into unknown worlds. With blood-red Crusader crosses emblazoned on their sails the explorers arrived in the heart of the Muslim East at a time when the old hostilities between Christianity and Islam had intensified. In two voyages that spanned six years Vasco da Gama would fight a running sea battle that would ultimately change the fate of three continents. The Last Crusade is an epic tale of spies intrigue and treachery; of bravado brinkmanship and confused - often comical collisions - between cultures encountering one another for the first time. With the world once again tipping back East The Last Crusade offers a key to understanding age-old religious and cultural rivalries resurgent today. Quantity Available: 1. Hill 1168 Second and best edition

The Alceste brought Lord Amherst to China to serve as ambassador and specifically to negotiate the China trade at the time a matter of dispute between China and Great Britain. M'Leod who was surgeon on the ship describes the voyage out the various calls in the East Indies including touching at Batavia surveying off Korea the visit to Okinawa another to Manila and the shipwreck off the coast of Sumatra and subsequent rescue from Malay pirates. A brief but interesting interview with Napoleon at St. Helena is also included in the narrative. This was one of the most popular travel books of its time portraying the Far East to a much wider audience than had been reached by earlier accounts. The idyllic descriptions of Lewchew undoubtedly appealed to the romantic sensibilities of the era. Indeed buoyed by its success M'Leod published another work recounting his time as a slaver A Voyage to Africa with some Account of the Manners and Customs of the Dahomian People.

Condition:

Attractive half rebind some foxing through out with no spotting to plates else a very good copy. 1994116302Bundaberg: Corkwood Press 1994. Hardcover. Fine. Bundaberg Corkwood Press 1994 facsimile edition/ 1896. Quarto four volumes ii xviii 220; ii iv 432; vi 204; and vi 200 pages with numerous illustrations plus 66 pages of plates several folding 13 in colour and a large folding map. Cloth; a fine set. The purpose of this scientific expedition sponsored by mining magnate and philanthropist William Austin Horn and with Charles Winnecke as commander and surveyor was to examine the MacDonnell Ranges on the not unreasonable premise that 'when the rest of the Continent was submerged the elevated portions of the McDonnell sic Range existed as an island and that consequently older forms of life might be found in the more inaccessible parts'. This in fact proved not to be the case but the expedition of some fourteen weeks and 2000 miles by camel was an outstanding success. 'It was not the intention . to explore a new region . But in the pursuit of natural history the expedition split into independent groups and explored undiscovered areas thus filling in more of the blank spaces in this vast region' Feeken Feeken and Spate. 'These volumes constitute one of the most substantial contributions in nineteenth-century Australian exploration but perhaps more importantly the expedition is a landmark in anthropological history because it resulted in Baldwin Spencer meeting Frank Gillen' Mulvaney. Limited to only 500 sets and sold out on publication. 4 items. Corkwood Press hardcover
