La spedizione antartica britannica salpò da Cardiff il 15 giugno 1910, sotto il comando del Capitano Robert Falcon Scott, il cui scopo era quello di diventare il primo ad arrivare al polo sud. Scott e il suo equipaggio di quattro uomini arrivò al polo sud il 17 gennaio 1912, solo per scoprire che il norvegese Roald Amundsen vi era già arrivato quasi un mese prima. I cinque uomini della spedizione perirono durante il ritorno al campo base, e i loro corpi furono ritrovati il 12 novembre 1912, assieme alle lettere e i diari che fornirono dettagli sulla loro spedizione e su cui questi volumi sono basati. The British Antarctic Expedition set sail from Cardiff on 15 June 1910, under the command of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, with the aim of being the first to reach the South Pole. Scott and his party of four men reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that a Norwegian team, led by Roald Amundsen had arrived there almost a month earlier. Five men in the British party died on their journey back to the base camp. Their bodies were discovered on 12 November 1912, along with letters and diaries which provided details of their journey and upon which these volumes are based

Although this was described as "by far the most cost-effective and carefully planned scientific expedition of the Heroic Age" Bruce received no formal honour or recognition from the British Government and the expedition's members were denied the prestigious Polar Medal.
