This is a bibliography of Tripoli and the Cyrenaica, one of Playfair's most valuable work, which includes 579 entries, from B.C.484 to 1889, and a succinct list of the Tripoli Archives from the Public Record Office in London - a series of 62 MS. volumes containing correspondence from and to the Consulate-General of Tripoli. Arranged chronologically, this fascinating bibliography is accompanied by an index and a detailed folding sketch map.

A noteworthy and engaging study of the life and custom of the Chaouïa Berbers, the Aurasian people eastern Algeria's Aurès mountains, and of French influence a region which would be fraught with brutality in a revolutionary war only thirteen years later, as the same people would fight for independence. Describing it as one of the most clearly defined cultural regions in North Africa, the account presents a mixture of cultural, religious, linguistic and ethnographical analyses with topics such as agricultural practices, the tradition of transhumance and annual migration in search of better watered pastures, important commodities in a semi-nomadic society, flat topped dwellings in small villages or dechras, a description of Menâa which was one of the largest villages, defence against invading enemy tribes, weaponry and restrictions on the latter, the impact of French assimilation efforts on Berber society even with a nominal number of foreigners physically present, and in turn, Berber interest in French culture. The lieutenant's account is well illustrated, further providing notes and statistics relating to the images.

Accompanied by a spectacularly large fold fold out map for illustration. The Helmand river rises in the Hindu Kush mountains, west of Kabul, passing north of the Unai Pass. It crosses south-west through the desert of Dashti Margo, to the Seistan marshes and the Hamun-i-Helmand lake region around Zabol at the Afghan-Iranian border.

Undertaken at the behest of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, this expedition's objective was to study the geology of Bakhtiari country, an area believed to possess oil located in south-western Persia, between the Diz or Sehzar River on the north-west and the Karun River on the south-east - home to the semi-nomadic Bakhtiari tribes. Of particular geological interest are Harrison's depictions of the region's narrow valleys or tangs, his discussion of imbrics and tectonics and the expedition's arduous trekking itself: via Zeloi; the whale-backed mountain range, Kuh-i-Pabda; Chulbar on the north-eastern base of Kuh-i-Pabda; the Gapi basin; following a branch of the river Ab-i-Balut; Silili; Baznui; the country around Qal'eh Kuh and Ushtarinan Kuh; Qal'eh Pachah; Niyakan and Kuh-i-Dalan and numerous other locations.
