Finora inedite in Italia, queste lettere sono rimaste per anni nel cassetto dell'editore inglese John Murray, che le ha pubblicate per la prima volta nel 1942. Primo contatto con l'Oriente di una delle più grandi viaggiatrici del Novecento, queste pagine restituiscono l'emozione e l'entusiasmo di una donna che per cultura e coraggio rimane una delle icone più importanti della libertà e dell'emancipazione femminile. I luoghi che la Stark attraversa sono zone "calde" allora come oggi e le sue puntuali e appassionate descrizioni consentono al lettore di immergersi nella magia di intere regioni, ormai difficilmente accessibili a causa della violenza dei conflitti in atto. Testimonianza storica, dunque, che insieme alla soggettività propria dello stile epistolare dipingono un'immagine a tutto tondo del Vicino Oriente.
