In Israel he served in a number of economic posts and, at the time of his death, was economic coordinator of the Israel Government. In collaboration with the later Finance Minister Eliezer Kaplan, Mr. Hoofien developed fiscal policies which helped shape the young Israeli economy. EXTREMELY RARE complete English translation of the 'Mejelle' (1869-1876) - the civil law of the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the first (partial) codification of Islamic law undertaken without having recourse to secular borrowings. This full translation of the 'Mejelle' was made by C.A.Hooper - Gilchrist Memorial Scholar in Turkish and Ouseley Memorial Scholar in Arabic in the University of London, who also wrote a short introduction to a more detailed study of the 'Mejelle'. 220x140mm. XI+511 pages. Brown Hardcover with embossed emblem and gilt spine. Cover slightly dirty. Cover upper corners slightly rubbed, cover bottom edges and corners peeling. Cover corners slightly bumped. Spine edges, rear hinge and middle tattered and partly missing. Spine detached from front cover and partly detached from rear cover. Front cover and 20 first pages coming partly loose from binding - binding visible on introduction first page. Pages yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare English translation of the 'Mejelle' made by major authority in the field of Turkish, Arabic, and Palestine and Transjordan courts, has unfortunately suffered some external damage to its cover, but is in good condition on the inside. This extremely rare book, despite its age damage, is still in good reading condition, and we offer it at greatly discounted price.

Palestine old and new, Jewish and Arab, modern and ancient, urban and rural, in a well selected collection of photographs, many of which are rarely printed elsewhere. Includes very rare air surveillance photographs of Nazareth and Jerusalem, borrowed from the War Archive in Munich, and nicely reproduced here as full-page plates. The cover plate is a painting of the Temple Mount by the Austrian born painter and illustrator Prof. Franz Kienmayer (1886 - 1963).

In a very good condition. ~ First edition. Albert Montefiore Hyamson (1875-1954). English administrator. From 1917 to 1919 he edited the Zionist Review. He served as Chief Immigration Officer in Palestine under the British Mandate, returning to England in 1934. He later became president of the Jewish Historical Society of England. He published studies of Palestine and Zionism as well as a history of the Jews of England. Here, he claims to have written a book which has no concern with Palestine either as a religious or an archaeological centre, but instead deals with the present and the future. The front paste-down bears the lovely, contemporary booksellers' ticket of R. Mazin & Co., London, "Publishers, Booksellers, Printers, Bookbinders, etc." displaying a banner in Hebrew.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original map. Oblong atlas folio. (57 x 77 cm). In Ottoman script. Folded. Stains on the upper side. Slightly chipped margins. Filistin haritasi. Scale: 1/250.000. Erkilet was an officer of the Ottoman Army and the general of the Turkish Army. In fall 1941 he, along with General Ali Fuad Erden, visited the occupied territories in Ukraine (including Crimea) on the invitation of Gerd von Rundstedt. From there he and other Turkish officers flew to Rastenburg to meet Hitler in person. In 1943 he published his essays on that trip under the title "What I Saw on the Eastern Front". Being a staunch Turanist, he was briefly detained for Panturkic activities in 1948 together with some other prominent Turanists.
