"When I visited Palestine, I had no thought of writing a book about it," Opens Miller, Principle of the Madras Christian College and Fellow of the University of Madras, his foreword to the book. "I found, somewhat to my surprise, that (.) an ordinary visitor who tries to observe for himself can still do something to promote a better understanding of its topography and history." In his excellent study he concentrates on the Biblical places Michmash, Elah, Gilboa, and Shiloh, and the rich history that is connected with them.

Neil, the author of the successful "Pictured Palestine", has lived in Jerusalem from 1871 to 1874, and became familiar with the land and its peoples. He returned in 1875 to travel both Egypt and the Holy Land, where he had concluded his writing.
