RARE copy of the College Calendar published by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in its 5th year (1930). The Hebrew University, which depended on the diaspora Jewry to supply it with both funds and students, used to print such books for circulation among donors. The book contains a list of the various staff members, overview of the work done at the university's institutes (which, at the time, were limited to Jewish Studies, Oriental Studies, General Humanities, Mathematics, Chemistry, Natural History of Palestine, Microbiology and Hygiene), information on academic and non-academic activities, register of courses for 1930 and 1931, student statistics and a detailed financial report. Additionally, the book includes a map and 5 b&w photographs of the Mount Scopus campus. 23.5x16 cm. 134 pages and 14 plates. Original black cloth hardcover with gilt lettering on spine. First brochure for the first Israel Bond Issuance, announcing the amount and bond types available, etc. Contains several charts and graphs discussing Israel's import/export amounts, public debt, government expenditures, military expenditures, etc. With one map of Israel. The idea to float bonds issued by Israel's government was conceived by Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, in the aftermath of Israel's War of Independence. The war had taken a terrible toll in casualties (more than 1% of the country's population was killed) , and the nation's fledgling economy was devastated. Compounding the dire situation was the fact that Israel faced economic demands unique to the new state, most especially the arrival of hundreds of thousands of immigrants. In Israel's early years, immigrants generally fell into two categories: Holocaust survivors and Jewish refugees from Arab countries, who poured in as the British Blockade ended and Middle Eastern Jews fled or were expelled from their home countries. Short on money, the country suffered food shortages and rationing, and the new arrivals had to be housed in primitive conditions. With his country financially overwhelmed, Ben-Gurion turned to the Diaspora community for help. In September 1950, he convened a meeting of American Jewish leaders at Jerusalem's King David Hotel, where he proposed issuing bonds to help provide Israel with a more secure economic foundation. Ben-Gurion's goals were two-fold: to obtain millions of dollars in funding for immigrant absorption and the construction of national infrastructure, and to engage Diaspora Jewry as active partners in building the new Jewish state. The American Jewish leaders supported Ben-Gurion's plan and, the following spring, the prime minister traveled to New York to help launch the inaugural Independence Issue at a gala Madison Square Garden ceremony . Published for the nine year anniversary of his death and features commemorative essays by Menachem Begin, Ari Jabotinsky, and more. Vladimir (Zeev) Jabotinsky (18801940) , Zionist leader, founder of Revisionist Party; he was involved in Zionist politics since the turn of the century in Russia, was famous as a publicist, poet, essayist, and orator in Russian, Hebrew, and Yiddish; he founded the Jewish Legion in the first world war, and in the 1920s, founded the right-wing Revisionist Zionist movement Betar after having broken with mainstream Zionism. During a tour of the United States in 1940, he died suddenly, and due to the animosity toward him on the part of Ben-Gurion, his remains were not returned to Israel until after Ben-Gurions final resignation as prime minister in 1964.
