In good condition, very good and clean interior. ~ First edition. Interesting and very rare document relating to the Jewish "Planters Association of Palestine". The first part, approved by the High Commissioner Herbert Samuel, is the Memorandum of Association. Its articles specify the objects for which the company is established as "the purchase of any lands, forests (.) and other immovable property in Palestine, Transjordania, Syria, and the Peninsula of Sinai, for the purpose of constructing, maintaining, and managing any roads, ways, railways, bridges, viaducts, harbours, telegraphs, electrical works, factories, etc. In doing so, the company will take over all the assets and liabilities of 'The Ottoman Company for Commerce and Agriculture and Industries Limited' incorporated under Turkish Law the 26th April, 1910". On the curious case of "Agendath (sic.) Netaim", which the half-Jewish Leopold Bloom spends a whole day considering, one should read with pleasure in James Joyce's "Ulysses". [TO THIS IS ADDED:] "Statuts de la Societé Ottomane de Commerce, d'Agriculture et d'Industrie." Constantinople, Ferd. Walla, 1910. 12mo. Pp. 12. Plain wrappers. In fine condition. [AND:] "Prospekt. Ottomanische anonyme Gesellschaft für Agricultur, Handel und Industrie. Genehmigt mit Kaiserlicher Irade vom 26 April/9 Mai 1910. Jaffa, [Agudath Netaim],1911." 12mo. Pp. 8. Self-wrappers. Original document with manuscript entries specifying names of the Committee members and its Auditors, financial situation, scope and scale of the plantation (Oranges 235 dunam; Olives 385 dunam, etc.). Extremely rare set of documents relating to one of the earliest Zionist enterprises.
1st edition. Original single fold wrappers, 12mo, [4] pages. Service includes: National Anthem sung by Cantor Adolph Katchko, Invocation by David de Sola Pool; Greetings by Rabbi Joseph Zeitlin; Prayer for the United Nations by Rabbi J. X. Cohen; [Sermon] by Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver; Benediction by Rabbi Abraham M. Heller; and closing with the singing of Hatikvah. On March 25, 1948, 6 days prior to this event, US President Harry Truman made the following statement regarding the upcoming vote on Palestine at the UN: This country vigorously supported the plan for partition with economic union recommended by the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine and by the General Assembly. We have explored every possibility consistent with the basic principles of the Charter for giving effect to that solution. Unfortunately, it has become clear that the partition plan cannot be carried out at this time by peaceful means. We could not undertake to impose this solution on the people of Palestine by the use of American troops, both on Charter grounds and as a matter of national policy. The United Kingdom has announced its firm intention to abandon its mandate in Palestine on May 15. Unless emergency action is taken, there will be no public authority in Palestine on that date capable of preserving law and order. Violence and bloodshed will descend upon the Holy Land. Large-scale fighting among the people of that country will be the inevitable result . These dangers are imminent. Responsible governments in the United Nations cannot face this prospect without acting promptly to prevent it. The United States has proposed to the Security Council a temporary United Nations trusteeship for Palestine to provide a government to keep the peace. Such trusteeship was proposed only after we had exhausted every effort to find a way to carry out partition by peaceful means. Trusteeship is not proposed as a substitute for the partition plan but as an effort to fill the vacuum soon to be created by the termination of the mandate on May 15. The trusteeship does not prejudice the character of the final political settlement. It would establish the conditions of order which are essential to a peaceful solution.

A magnificent visual tour and a celebration of fine early photography in Palestine. The fine technique of gravure printing (Kupfertiefdruck, Rakeltiefdruck), developed by Karl Klic (1841-1927), is often referred to erratically as photogravure or heliogravure, terms which describe another process. Experiments in gravure printing began in the 1850s, and reproductions of rare prints by this method became common from the 1870s. It was not, however, until around 1880 that the development of this most brilliant and faithful monochrome reproductive technique yet known in the history of printing, began. Klic adapted the cross-line screen to the old hand photogravure process, but kept it secret rather than patenting it, and the technique was reinvented by others in the years afterwards. Noted classicist Dr. Henriëtte Boas' copy, with her bookplate. [Descriptive text Copyright Librarium, The Hague]
