Refugee art historian Karl Schwarz had founded the Jewish Museum in Berlin on January 24, 1933, less than a week before Hitler came to power in Germany. Wisely, Schwarz then accepted an offer for a position as the first artistic director and chief curator of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art from Meir Dizengoff, the mayor of Tel Aviv, himself. Schwarz brought more than 2, 500 works with him to Israel. The book contains 130 illustrations and photographs of art as well as an appendix with the biographies of the artists. His minute and thorough scientific observations, notes, maps, drawings, and sketches were prepared for publication at the request of the Palestine Exploration Fund by his friend, the explorer Guy le Strange. They were published here for the first time. The papers of le Strange and Laurence Oliphant, "A Ride Through Ajlun and the Belka During the Autumn of 1884," and "A Trip to the North-East of Lake Tiberias, in Jaulan," respectively, were published before but appear here for the first time in a book form. Gottlieb Schumacher (1857) settled at a very young age with his family in Haifa, where his father, a member of the "Temple Association" designed most of the buildings of the German Colony. Following the completion of his engineering studies in Stuttgart, he returned to Haifa and was appointed Chief Engineer for the Province of Akko. He designed many buildings and was a leading figure in civil engineering. One of his most important projects was the survey of the Golan, Hauran, and the Ajlun districts in preparation for the construction of the Damascus-Haifa railway. In the course of this survey he produced the first accurate maps of these regions, along with detailed descriptions of the archaeological remains and the present villages. He published many other reports and books on his discoveries, supported by the Palestine Exploration Fund. With the outbreak of World War I the Templar community left for Germany. Schumacher returned in 1924 to his home on the Carmel, where he died a year later. Although he was born in Ohio, U.S.A., Gottlieb was brought-up and educated as a German. The author of all titles is an important figure in the early archaeological explorations of Palestine - Gottlieb Schumacher (1857-1925), an American of German descent who lived and worked in Palestine as civil engineer, architect and archaeologist, renowned for carrying out the survey of the Golan, Hauran, and Ajlun districts (in preparation for the construction of the Damascus-Haifa railway) producing the first accurate maps of these regions, and detailed descriptions of the archaeological remains and the contemporary villages, as well as excavations of the ruins of the ancient city of Megiddo. Each title contains a fold-out map, b&w figures/illustrations and plans, except the second - "Jaulan", which contains four fold-out maps and 144 b&w figures (with all the original maps and illustrations). The travelogue, reflections, and artistic impressions of Eduard Wilhelm Schulz, Vicar of the Reformed Church of Mulheim on the Ruhr. This copy includes his sermon on the book of Timothy, given in Jerusalem during his pilgrimage in 1851. It was translated from the German and published for the first by the Dutch publisher W. F. Stramrood, in 1854. At that time, the 24-page publication was sold separately at the price of 30 Florin Cents. This copy includes also the lithograph "Vogelperspectief van het Heilige Land" (Bird's-eye View of the Holy Land), printed by F. Böger and published by Stramrood together with a 16-page "Verklaring" (explanatory notes), and was sold separately for the price of one Florin. Both these additions are paginated here consecutively.

Hans-Joachim Schoeps (1909-1980) was a German Jewish professor and scholar of religious history who taught at the University of Erlangen. Most of his writings deal with primitive Christianity, and he in effect sought to bringing Judaism closer to Christianity (interesting, in that respect, was his belief, in and around 1933, that it was possible for German Jews to come to terms with National Socialism.)
