Minor shelfwear. ; Examines Jewish history against the background of the successive kingdoms which conrolled Judea. From the time of Cyrus to the time of Herod, except for a brief period of independence in the second and first centuries BC, it was subservient to either the Persians, the Hellenistic kingdoms, or the Romans. The author discusses the political situation in Judea and the social and economic conditions in so far as we can know them, and the early literary and religious developments. He then moves on to a discussion of the literature of the second and first centuries BC: the scholarly and pietistic traditions, apocalyptic and historical writings, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the completion of the canon. ; 256 pages

First edition. Original Paper Wrappers. 8vo. 16 pages; 23 cm. Three eloquent High Holiday sermons written by the renowned Rabbi Judah Leon Magnes about what it means to be Jewish in the modern world. We moderns- and the Jews imagine themselves to be the modern of the moderns, just as they often strive to be more royal than the king- are apt to be very boastful of our education, our culture, our vast mechanical and commercial and scientific enterprises; and we are at times justified in smiling casually at much of the simplicity and naivete of the life of even a generation back. SUBJECT (S) : Reform Judaism. OCLC lists 2 holdings worldwide (HUC, NLI) . Slight tear in cover. Front and back pages slightly rubbed. Some general toning, margin notes on one page. Good+ condition. Memoirs of an Army Officer and Turkish diplomat in Paris during Vichy time. Behiç Erkin was a Turkish career officer, first director (1920-1926) of the Turkish State Railways, nationalized under his auspices, statesman and diplomat of the Turkish Republic, who helped save almost 20,000 ethnic Jews in France during World War II. He served as Turkey's ambassador to Budapest between 1928-1939, and to Paris and Vichy between August 1939-August 1943. As Turkish ambassador in France under the German Occupation after June 1940, Erkin used the power of his office and nation's neutrality to save Jews who could document a Turkish connection, however slight, from the Holocaust. Other Turkish diplomats in France and elsewhere, were also active in this rescue effort. The consulate staff under Necdet Kent in Marseille was particularly involved.

In appendice “Lettera agli ebrei italiani”. Autori: Franco Fortini. Curatori: Centro studi Franco Fortini.
