It has three principal sections, firstly the siege, in which the Australian 9th Division held out so manfully against Rommel's Afrika Korps, then the breakout, where the British 70th Division broke clear of the fortress to create a corridor towards an intended rendezvous with the Eighth Army, and finally an important appraisal of the main opponent the Allies faced - the Desert Fox, Erwin Rommel.

One of the earliest escape narratives. The author was captured near Tobruk whilst commanding 5th New Zealand Infantry Brigade and placed in Campo 12 near Florence. During his captivity he shared quarters with VC holders Neame and Carton de Wiart whose exploits he recorded in detail. Hargest was one of the highest ranking Allied escapers on WWII. After a successful home run he returned to Europe on D-Day with 50th (Northumbrian) Division to be killed in action two months later. Enser, p.149; Mulholland & Jordan, H28.
