Near Fine. 5 handwritten letters to William Ward 1873-1879 regarding the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad which existed from 1872 to 1885; it was succeeded by the Philadelphia Midland Railroad. William Ward was one of the organizers of the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad and in 1874 was the president and treasurer pro tem. Letters #1 and #2 Sept. 5 and Dec. 5 1873 are from Jos. H. McKeehan an attorney in Philadelphia who is writing about deliquent subscribers to the railroad. Letter #3 Dec. 18 1873 is from the Village Record a newspaper in West Chester Pa. with a copy of the advertisement that ran in the paper listing the dates that instalments from railroad subscribers were due in 1872. Letter #4 Nov. 26 1875 is from John Smith of Ridley Park about a plan to petition to vacate a street and public ground adjoining Mr. Bartol's purchase. Letter #5 Sept. 8 1879 from the superintendant of the Government Paper Mill in Dalton Mass. complaining about the appointment of counters and watchmen at the mill presumably to Ward as a congressman. William Ward 1837-1895 studied law and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1859. He opened a practice in Chester; was involved in real estate and banking; served as a member of the Chester city council and as city solicitor; and was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Delaware County in the 45th 46th and 47th Congresses 1877-1883. Brown 1/4 leather mottled paper over boards with "Halifax Township" possibly indicating former Township ownership gilt on leather label on front panel. Leather is chipped with some loss at both spine extremities; board edges and corners are rubbed. Former ownership inscription of W. J. Daniel Elizabethville Dauphin Co. PA" on front pastedown dated 1915. Front endpapers show soiling and a stain that bleeds through lightly onto the first plate. 14 pp. index illus. w/ 6 hand-colored plates No. 1 shows approx. 1" square of loss to blank portion of page. Interior shows occasional light soiling with a dime-sized soil mark on the top edge of each leaf near the binding gutter. No publisher information provided though contents indicate publication date in or about 1848. 1844008189Philadelphia: M. Fithian 1844. Paperback. Good. 12 p.; 22 cm. Lacking wrapper. Stamped on title page: "Case 42 Shelf E." In early May 1844 Protestant nativists in Philadelphia feeling threatened by the inscreasing number of Catholic immigrants held public meetings accusing Catholics of seeking to have the Bible removed from public schools among other things. Incendiary language led to violence in which people and buildings were attacked. The Court of Quarter Sessions created a grand jury to investigate which concluded that the Catholics were to blame and the nativists were "unoffending citizens." On June 18 1844 a meeting of Catholic citizens of the city appointed a committee to draft a response. In this address they refute the unfounded charge that they sought to have the Bible removed from the schools and responded to other recent events. Patton cashier of the First National Bank of Curwensville Pa. Signed by E. M. Curtis cashier. Alexander Ennis Patton 1852-1904 became the president of the First National Bank of Patton when it was established in 1893 and was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate in 1900. The Grandin brothers John Livingston Grandin 1836-1912 William James Grandin 1838-1904 and Elijah Bishop Grandin 1840-1917 in 1859 followed the lead of Edwin Drake in Titusville Pa. who had dug the first successful commercial oil well in the United States earlier that year. With oil money they established the Grandin Brothers Bank in 1870. Victims of the Jay Cooke & Co. bankruptcy in 1873 they exercised their right to take Northern Pacific Railway bonds with land-purchasing rights in the Dakota Territory rather than 15 cents on the dollar. Although the bonds themselves were worthless the 26000 acres they acquired became the largest corporate wheat farm in the Dakota Territory in the late 19th century. Temple Grandin is the great-granddaughter of J. L. Grandin. In Near Fine Condition: lightly creased; clean and bright. Banking House of Grandin Brothers unknown

The guest list included President Grover Cleveland former president Rutherford B. Hayes members of the Supreme Court various foreign dignitaries members of Congress state governors and many others. The plates include the menu printed in red and black. Includes the toasts and speeches. Very scarce. In Good- Condition: lacking original wrapper; text block is separating; title page is lightly soiled; minor loss at upper corners of title page which has closed 2-cm. tear from spine; loss at fore-edge and lower corner of final two leaves without loss of text; loss at lower corners of final pages without loss of text; occasional closed tears along spine; text and illustrations are otherwise clean and solid.
